Luella Mae Nelson of Mora, MN passed away on Thursday, May 13, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. She was 94 years old.

Luella was born on October 30, 1926, in Bismarck, North Dakota to William and Louise (Shaffer) Manthie.

She grew up on the family farm, the second of twelve siblings and attended North Fork School until the eighth grade. After graduating eighth grade, Luella worked for Mrs. Olson doing housework and milking her two cows. She later went to Minneapolis to work for Majestic Cleaners for a few years then married James Nelson. To this union three children were born; David, Carol and Donald. They resided on a farm South of Bock, MN and years later divorced.

Luella sought employment in Minneapolis and worked at Munsingwear Factory. She met and married John Peterson and moved to a farm South of Bock, MN and later moved to a farm in Mora, MN. To this union, two sons were born, John Jr. and Richard. Her husband John passed away in 1980. Luella worked for 30 years and retired from E.P.C. in Mora, MN. She was a dedicated, strong, and hardworking woman who provided for her family. Throughout her years she had a lifelong love of working the farm and caring for animals.

Luella set quite an example for her children; they could see through her hard work and perseverance what it took to succeed in life. She believed whole heartedly the key to a happy long life was to love one another and enjoy every moment together. Luella always said, “Laughter is good for the heart”. These beautiful traits were passed down to her children, grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren.

In 1982, Luella married Elvin “Bud” Nelson. Bud was the love of her life for 23 years and her soulmate. Elvin passed away in August of 2005.

Luella independently resided in Mora, MN for the past eight years. She enjoyed her space, her time here and met many wonderful friends, enjoying coffee and conversation at her apartment complex.

She embraced her grandchildren and adored them. They were her blessings, the light of her world, and time with them was precious. Her grandchildren loved her dearly.
Luella was a hostess at heart. She enjoyed all the family gatherings and holidays over the years. She was an exceptional baker, and her cooking was something everyone looked forward to. Entertaining was one of her natural God given talents that she shared with all her loved ones. A beautiful lifelong gift of a heart so nurturing and caring for all who entered her kitchen! Never will we forget stacks of yummy pancakes at sunrise and with a little extra love of added goat milk! All who graced Luella’s kitchen felt her loving care, each and every one of us. We will treasure and remember our special times always at the kitchen table and cherish all the celebrations we had together.

On her homestead she always had animals and loved having a hobby farm. Luella raised dairy cows and beef cattle. She also, raised horses, sheep, goats, chickens, pigs, rabbits, doves, and cared for an orphan fawn. She enjoyed tending to her vegetable garden and was proud of her bountiful harvest used for canning. Luella’s green thumb and knowledge of beautiful flowers and plants she lovingly pruned and cared for adorned her property. Luella spent her past time with family and friends, traveling, reading, listening to music, scrapbooking memorabilia and pictures, sharing stories, doing word searches and enjoyed fishing.

Luella was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Her sweet smile, tender hugs, loving kind heart, sense of humor, sage advice, and cheerful spirit will forever be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. May God bless and keep her.

  1. It really makes little difference what my name is, I did not know Luella, but after reading her obit I wish I had. As well as the person(s) that wrote it. I can only hope that my life’s history will be marked with such a “beautiful’ tribute” at the end as Luellas!
