Larry Allen Menze, of Mora, MN, passed away on April 4, 2021 at his home following a courageous 15 month battle with metastatic bladder cancer. He was 74 years old.

Larry was born on May 18, 1946 on the family farm on Rush Lake near Ottertail, MN. He was the youngest of seven siblings born to Henry and Fern (Kempf) Menze. Being much younger than his siblings he grew up with his older nieces and nephews. One nephew mentioned recently that Larry was like a big brother to him, but sometimes a ”big bother” too!! He attended country school, parochial school and New York Mills High School, graduating in 1964. He met his future wife in high school and married Kathleen Pernula on June 12, 1965 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ottertail.

Larry and Kathy lived in Minneapolis the first two years of their marriage. While attending Dunwoody Institute to learn the trade of printing, Larry also worked at Paco Photo. In 1967 they moved to Mora where he worked for B&W Printers/Mora Advertiser for 22 years. In 1989 he opened his own small print shop and worked alongside his wife and son for 12 years. In 2002 he started working at Oslin Lumber where he remained until 2020 when the cancer prevented him from working any further. He loved his Oslin family of co-workers and customers.

Larry and Kathy’s son, Craig was born in 1969 and daughter, Jill in 1972. While raising their family they enjoyed many camping and fishing trips (sometimes camping on the lake shore of Larry’s family farm on Rush Lake). He attended many sports activities that the kids participated in while in school. He looked forward to and enjoyed deer hunting for many seasons. Larry always loved working outdoors in his yard, gardening, mowing, cutting and splitting wood for winter heat, and other projects (a trait he passed onto his son). He was there to help out neighbors or friends whenever he could.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church for over 50 years; becoming close friends with many of his church family.

His grandchildren brought great joy to his life. He was happy to be their grandpa and was so proud of them. He loved his whole family. We will miss him beyond words.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Orlend (Delores) Menze and Dean (Betty) Menze; sisters, Lois (Andrew) Koljonen, Verna (John) Johnson, Janice (Leroy) Jacobson; brother-in-law Robert Simmonds; father and mother-in-law Ray and Dorothy Pernula.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years Kathy of Mora; son Craig (Lisa Grahek) of Mora; daughter Jill (Rich) Nickles of Hermantown; grandchildren Bennett, Matthew and Elizabeth “Ellie” Nickles all of Hermantown; sister Shirley Simmonds of Duluth; brother-in-law Wesley (Kathy) Pernula of Brainerd; many, many nieces and nephews; great nieces, nephews and so many friends.
