Eugene “Gene” Byker, of Mora, passed away on Friday, September 11, 2020 at Welia Health in Mora.  He was 82 years old.

PRIVATE FAMILY GRAVESIDE SERVICE will be held at the Lewis Lake Memorial Gardens Cemetery with Pastor Bob DeYoung officiating.

Eugene Leroy Byker of Mora, passed away on Friday, September 11, 2020 at Welia Health in Mora. He was 82 years old.

Eugene, lovingly known as Gene, was born November 17, 1937, to Garrit and Doris (Norman) Byker in Braham, MN. He served in the US Army and fought in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in December of 1962. Gene was very proud of being a Veteran. Along with numerous jobs, Gene was a proud and dedicated member of the 49er’s Union; working as a heavy equipment operator until retiring at the age of 55.

Besides other marriages, on January 27, 1962, Gene was united in marriage with Judith Hollman, and to this union four children were born, Tammy, Debra, Travis, and Kimberly. They were later divorced but remained friends. Gene was united in marriage to Avis Krone on December 31, 2003. Gene and Avis made their home on a few acres in Mora, MN. In his later years, Gene enjoyed farming, helping various farmers with field work in the spring and fall, going to the casino to play bingo, having coffee at Sportsman’s Café, and spending time with family and friends. He will be missed by family, friends, and loyal little dog, Gizmo.

He is preceded in death by his wife Avis, parents Garrit and Doris, and brother Gary.

Gene is survived by his children, Tammy (Tim) Smith of Ogilvie, Deb (Mike) Gould of Coon Rapids, Travis Byker of Minneapolis, and Kim (Jerald) Gay of Ogilvie; 6 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; sister Vonnie Oman of Cambridge; step-children, Kathy (Steve) Kerr of Mora, Sandy (Jim) Larson of Isanti, Shari Fischer of Plymouth, Kim Barreno of CT, Dan (Julie) Krone of Mora, Darci (Chad) Perreault of CT, and Mike (Brittany) Krone of Isanti; and many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

  1. Gene always had a friendly smile. He’d always ask how the family was and then take the time to listen! He was fun to visit with at family get togethers, or when we just bumped into him and Avis. May God’s peace be with his family!

  2. Gene was always part of the family even though he and Judy were divorced. It was always nice to see him. Seeing him and Avis was a delight as well.

  3. It was always fun to see my cousin Gene. When I was small, he would tease me a lot as I was quite a bit younger. But he always had those twinkly eyes and great smile. Good memories of him! My sympathies to his families.
