Avis Marie Krone Byker of Mora, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2020 in her home where she longed to be after a difficult summer of hospitalizations and a month-long stay in rehab. She was 82 years old.

Avis Marie Nelson was born January 5, 1938, to Louis Emmanuel “Manny” & Mabel (Berg) Nelson in Grasston, MN. She attended elementary school in Grasston and then graduated from Braham High School in 1956.

On July 28, 1958, she was united in marriage to Arthur “Bud” Krone. After a few years they purchased a farm on the Groundhouse River south of Mora near Brunswick. In addition to raising their growing family, she milked cows (and goats), and helped tend to the crops plus she worked at Fingerhut in Princeton and AMOCO Plastic Factory in Mora during some of this time. She and Bud were also the first and only school bus drivers for Brunswick Country School before it consolidated with Mora Schools. They moved to a larger farm a few miles away in the fall of 1974 where they continued dairy farming until Bud died in a trucking accident on June 22, 1989. After Bud passed, her all-time favorite job was working at the vegetable stand during the summers for their good friends, Sheldon and Diane Zellman. She loved visiting with the customers and having her sister, Shirley, as a co-worker sometimes too.

Avis met Gene Byker in 1991 and they were married on December 31, 2003. She sold the farm in 1997 and kept a few acres where they called home. While living here, she worked at the Hinckley Grand Casino for over 10 years.

She will be missed by family, friends, and loyal little dog, Gizmo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Arthur “Bud” Krone; son, Bradley Ross Krone; siblings, Howard, Reynold, Lloyd, and Vahdah Nelson; brothers-in-law, Don Anderson and Jim Harwell; and sister-in-law Nadine Rau.

She is survived by husband, Eugene “Gene” Byker of Mora; children, Kathy (Steve) Kerr of Mora, Sandy (Jim) Larson of Isanti, Shari Fischer of Plymouth, Kim Barreno of CT, Dan (Julie) Krone of Mora, Darci (Chad) Perreault of CT, and Mike (Brittany) Krone of Isanti; stepsons, Ken Killinger of Braham and Rick Killinger of Stanchfield; sister Shirley Anderson of Mora; brother-in-law Roland Rau of TX; sisters-in-law, Kay Nelson of AZ, Joyce Harwell of TX, Diana Nelson of WI, and Vonnie Oman; step-children, Tammy (Tim) Smith, Debbie (Mike) Gould, Kim (Jerald) Gay, and Travis Byker; 21 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

  1. Kim and siblings, I am so sad for you all. I loved and admired your mom. She was the hardest working woman I ever knew. She had a great sense of humour and loved a good joke but was no pushover. She treated me like I was one of her kids. Whenever I would run into her in town she would always chat with me and ask about the rest of my family as well. Avis was just an all around GOOD soul and I will miss her always. Plus, she made a mean potato salad! Am I right?!

  2. I was sorry to hear the passing of Avis. My condolences to Gene and Avis family and friends. Avis was a wonderful person she will be missed by everyone .Due to COVID/19 I am unable to attend the funeral,my prayers will be with you all. Amen 🙏

  3. Dear Krone family,
We were sad to hear that your mom had passed away and pray you can cling closely to each other as you celebrate her life. We knew your family well since our families went to Brunswick grade school and Brunswick Baptist Church together, and remember a few of the older girls staying at our house on the farm a few times when your mom was in the hospital having a baby. Losing parents are hard yet we rejoice she’s spending eternity with Jesus.
    Much Love, Dave and Jill

  4. Dear Krone Family,
We were all very saddened by your mom’s passing. You and your mom have all been so wonderful to us, since our first meeting in Puerto Vallarta. Your mom was so very proud of her kids and grandkids and would give us an update on you all when we visited. She had to go through such a tough time in hospitals and rehab in the last few weeks, so there is some comfort in knowing she is at peace now and have others to visit in heaven. I hope there are slot machines there.
Please know you are all in our thoughts today and over the coming days and weeks as you all celebrate the wonderful person she was. We will never forget Avis and will always have a smile on our face when we remember her.
