George Schmidt Sr, of Braham, passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2020 at the Estates at Rush City.  He was 89 years old.

A PRIVATE FAMILY GRAVESIDE SERVICE WITH MILITARY HONORS will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

George J Schmidt, Sr., age 89, of Braham, passed away on February 6, 2020 at the Estates at Rush City.

George was born July 4, 1930 in Minneapolis, MN to George R. and Olga “Myrtle” (Anderson) Schmidt. He married Arlene Brummund on July 14, 1952. Together they had 4 children; Becky, Timothy, Donna, and Randy. They later divorced and George married Dorothy Garrett on Mother’s Day of 1981. Together they also had four children; Ann, George Jr., Mark and Clark. They also divorced.

During his lifetime George Sr. served 3 years in the Army and received the National Defense Service Medal. After discharge from the service, George worked on a few farms before becoming a carpenter. When he could no longer work as a carpenter, he found other jobs to provide for his family. Eventually he became self-employed as a sewing machine repair man in Princeton, Willow River and Mora, MN before finally retiring.

He was a Scout Master and active in his church. He enjoyed playing the guitar and harmonica as well as putting puzzles together.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his 8 children as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

  1. I remember George from Elmhurst Commons in Braham. He told lots of stories & laughed loud.
    He was a good Man. His being hard of hearing was tough but once he got to know you it was better to communicate with him. Everyone loved the smell of his fresh baked bread in the halls. He was good at sharing the bread, & butter! George may you be wrapped in the arms of Jesus.

  2. Im so sorry to hear of Georges passing. I was able to spend quite a bit of time getting to know him from Elmhurst as well. He was a special man with a contagious laugh for sure. He was also an awesome Santa who brought joy around Christmas at Elmhurst!
