Irene Anna Nelson Lancrain, of Mora, Minnesota, passed away on December 6, 2019. She was 97 years old.
Irene was born November 13, 1922 at home, 5 miles East of Onamia, in Mille Lacs County, Minnesota, to Esther Hanna Forsberg Nelson and Edward John Nelson. She grew up on the family farm, the oldest of 11 children, and attended Cove School, then Onamia High School before moving to Minneapolis, where she worked at the Golden Valley Hospital as a Nurse’s Aide.
During visits home to Onamia, Irene dated Charles Lancrain. The couple married on December 28, 1941, at the Lancrain family farm in Redtop, Minnesota, days before Charlie left for the Army during WWII. When Charlie left, Irene took a job with Munsingwear, also in Minneapolis.
Eventually, Irene joined Charlie in Wyoming. They both worked at the Army Hospital and lived in a tiny army trailer. On October 6, 1945, the couple welcomed a son, Charles Junior Lancrain. A few months later, Charlie (Sr.) was discharged from the Army and the family moved back to Minnesota. In 1946, the couple purchased an 80 acre farm in Isle, Minnesota. While caring for the farm animals and gardening, the couple kept an apartment and jobs in Minneapolis. Irene worked at Boos Dental Lab where she polished denture sets and at Plymouth Optical. Before selling the Isle farm in 1987 and moving to Mora, Irene worked as a Nurse’s Aide at the Isle Nursing Home. She then joined Charlie (Sr.) at Fingerhut in Mora. Irene worked at Fingerhut for 17 years before retiring at the age of 72.
Irene and Charlie enjoyed retirement and spent time traveling and working on their home in Mora. They eventually moved to an apartment in Mora and then to a house in Hinckley, Minnesota near their son Charles (Jr.) and his wife Mary.
Charlie (Sr.) passed away in 2006 and Irene then moved to The Vasa House in Mora where she enjoyed going for daily coffee with her friends in the building. In 2018, at the age of 96, Irene moved to Eastwood Assisted Living. Irene was a gifted gardener and always had beautiful flower and vegetable gardens. In her apartments, the window sills were filled with potted plants and flowers. Irene also enjoyed scrapbooks, going out for meals, parties of any kind, and being with family and friends. Irene’s smile, laugh, and love of onion rings will be truly missed by all who know and loved her. Special thanks to Irene’s caregivers at Eastwood Assisted Living and to all of her friends at Vasa House.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Floyd Nelson, Roy Nelson, and Willie Nelson; two sisters, Myrtle Ore and Lucille Bodin; and her beloved husband of 65 years, Charles Lancrain (Sr.).
Irene is survived by son Charles Lancrain (Jr.) (Mary); grandchildren – Shannon Lancrain (Craig Cornelison), and Joseph Lancrain (Charity Anderson); great-grandchildren – Brianna, Nevaeh, Riley, Jack, and Vincent; brothers – Jimmy Nelson (Sandy), Donald Nelson, and Harold Nelson; sisters – Florence Ore and Darlene Purdy (Jack); nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
