A life lived well to serve his faith, his family and his community ended for Roger N. Eklund, age 90, on Thursday, September 5, 2019 as a result of seven plus years with Alzheimer’s. He was lovingly cared for at home by his wife, children, caretakers, and the Allina Hospice workers.

Roger was born on December 10, 1928, attended his first eight grades at the Goebel School, Dist. 26 in Nessel Township, Chisago County; and graduated from the Braham High School in 1946. After high school, he was employed by the Bruce Motor Freight of St. Paul; and again during his college years at the University of Minnesota.

He married Marian Pearson on March 25, 1950 at the Braham Evangelical Lutheran Church. He farmed with his Dad until 1954 when he started college at the University of Minnesota graduating in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science Degree and later a Master’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin, River Falls, WI. Roger taught Agriculture for 29 years, first at Brownton High School and the last 25 years at Cambridge, MN High School without missing one day of teaching (over 5,000 days.)

He was a member of the Alpha Zeta Fraternity at the U. of M. He became a Master Mason on April 5, 1961; and was a member of the Scottish Rite and Zurah Temple. At Brownton, he served as president of the Brownton and the McLeod Education Association. He served on many boards, namely: Chisago County Planning Commission and Zoning for 15 years; Isanti and Chisago County Fair, Eastern Minnesota Livestock, Central Rivers Coop, Minnesota Farmer’s Union and Chisago County DFL. He was a founding member of both the Braham and the Grandy Lions; and a council member and Sunday School superintendent of three Lutheran churches: Brownton, Cambridge, and Calvary at Stanchfield. For many years he was involved in choosing the Outstanding Teacher of the Year for the Minnesota Education Association. He was a founding member of the Braham Scholarship Foundation.

As a Future Farmer’s instructor and advisor; he and his students planted over 350,000 Evergreen seedlings on Isanti and Chisago County farms; and used the money earned to take his students on camping/canoe trips in the Boundary Waters Canoe area near Ely, MN

Roger began his life on the home farm at one month old; and really never left the farm.

Roger is preceded in death by his parents Nels and Harriet (Anderson) Eklund, sister in law Mary Eklund, and nephews Scott and Jerry Eklund.

  2. I am so saddened to hear the news! He was such an inspiration to so many people! May the Lord comfort you in these difficult times!

  3. At age 80,he told me the raspberry jalapeno jam I made was really good. That is what I liked a lot about Roger, he was open and interested and would try something new even at an advanced age. And talk about it too. So good to know him! My sincere sympathies and admiration for his family that took such good care of Roger as he prepared to go on ahead.
