James was born on January 30, 1945 in Swea City, Iowa. He attended Ledgeyard Schools and was involved in 4-H until the age of 15 years, when the family moved to Stanchfield, Minnesota where he then attended Braham Area Schools until the 11th grade. He joined the army during the Vietnam era and was stationed in Germany. Upon returning home he attended Dunwoody School of Business in interior design. During his career he had the privilege of running his own business and working for the Painter’s Union. He worked on homes, businesses, university campuses, and churches. He painted, wallpapered, taped and had the privilege of painting real gold.
In 1964 he married and two children were born from this union. When the marriage dissolved, he traveled the United States before returning to his home roots of Iowa and settling in Davenport, Iowa. During his lifetime he enjoyed snowmobiling, four wheeling, farming the family farm and fishing trips, which included many trips to Mille Lacs and Canada.
In late 2017 his health began to decline and he was diagnosed with lung cancer. A joint decision was made by him and his children to move back to Minnesota so he could spend his final days closer to family. He then settled in St. Michael, Minnesota.
James was preceded in death by his grandson Derek Babb, nephew Shane White, his parents Maynard and Hattie (Olson) White, the Olson aunts, uncle Rueben, and cousins, Marjorie, Robert and Richie Fritzs.
