Jean Mattson was born on May 31, 1925 and raised in Nakamun, Alberta, Canada; the youngest of 8 children born to William and Agnes (Westie) Mathewson. She met Bud (Edwin John Mattson) up on the Alaska Highway and they married in 1945 at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. They moved to Mora, Minnesota and later to Excelsior, Minnesota. Their one son Gary was born in 1950 and passed away in 1972. During Jean’s working years she was employed as a clerk at Bacon Drug for 27 years. In 1974 Bud bought his home farm in Hillman Township from his siblings. Bud and Jean continued to live in Excelsior, and spent weekends at the farm. Over the years, Bud built their two homes. In 1984 Bud took an early retirement and they moved to the farm. Bud became bed ridden from Parkinson’s disease. He passed away in 1995. Jean continued to live on the farm where she enjoyed and considered her neighbors as family. She loved doing things for people who least expected it.
She was a member of Hillman Baptist Church, baptized in 2001 in the Knife River; and a member of the Mora Order of Eastern Star. She volunteered at many Mora organizations including Kanabec History Center, Seven County Federation and One More Time Store.
Jean is preceded in death by her parents; husband Edwin “Bud” Mattson; son Gary; and siblings.
