James Howard McCarty passed away peacefully on July 5, 2018 at home in Mora. He was 87 years old.

Jim was born September 28, 1930 to Thornton and Mildred (Ottinger) McCarty in Springvale, Minnesota. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Cambridge High School.

He was united in marriage to Kay Nelson in 1949 and moved to Mora where he began working at the Kanabec County Times. Jim enlisted in the Air Force Reserve and was called to active duty during the Korean Conflict in 1950 and served until 1951.

Jim worked for the local newspaper for 44 years, retiring in 1994 as Shop Foreman. Over the 65+ years Jim lived in Mora, he was a strong supporter of Mora and a vocal proponent of shopping locally. Jim served for decades on the Mora Park and Recreation board taking pride in promoting youth and family activities. Friends and neighbors knew they could count on Jim for help whether it be getting a ride to a Dr. appointment, helping to get a young boy stuck in a tree back to the ground, fixing a broken snowmobile track, eradicating a stray skunk or house sitting for snow birds.

Jim enjoyed spending time with family, fixing things and doing anything outside – hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, taking evening drives to find deer and in retirement years morning coffee and dice at the Crystal.

He was preceded in death by: father; mother; wife Kay, brother LaVerne and sister Tessie.

Jim is survived by his children, Mary McCarty of Buffalo, Mike (Gail) McCarty of Sartell and Marlys McCarty of Buffalo; grandchildren, Amanda (Luis) McCarty – Leandro of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Ryan (Kelly Jo) McCarty of Sartell and Ashley McCarty of Atlanta, Georgia; great grandchildren, Lillian McCarty, Madison McCarty, Tiago Leandro and Elodie Leandro; brothers and sisters, Dixie Struckman, Meryl Anderson, Ned (Lela) McCarty, Verl McCarty, Lynn (Joann) McCarty and Sandy (Bill) Boese; brothers-in-law, Gene (LaVonne) Nelson and Gerald (Julie) Nelson; and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family and friends.

Sincere sympathy. He will always hold a special spot in my heart as well. He was so good to everyone and had a benevolent soul. He cared about people and the simple thing of taking people for rides made such a difference to so many. Selfless and giving. Mary, my friend, I am sorry for your grief. My last memory with Jim was when you ha all of us over before the 45th reunion. Just like the old days of putting up with all of us gals hanging out. Of course my sympathies go out to the entire family but I must mention my friend Mary.

RIP Jim. I am sure you are already reunited in heaven with Kay and all of the folks who went before you that you cared for and loved. God I am sure welcomed you with open arms!!!

Jim was one of the original members of No Tail Ranch. He was also the last original living member and will be missed by all of us. I have many great memories of sitting around the table eating great meals and listening to Jim’s stories of the old day’s, They claimed they dragged deer a couple of miles back to the shack . Either he was full of you know what or we are a bunch of wimps. Unfortunately I think it’s the latter. Anyway he will be missed by a lot of people. Here’s a toast to you Jim. Thanks for the memories.

We are all sad at this loss of a good man. Life is too short.

Uncle Jim had a huge heart. He didn’t say much, but you always knew he cared when he would ask a well thought out question about someone’s well-being. He never complained about his own sufferings. In all that- he reminded me of Grandpa McCarty. I will miss Uncle Jim. My thoughts are with you all and I’m sorry I could not attend the services.

David and I are sorry for your loss and wanted to send our condolences. We appreciate the lovingly written and well thought out obituary, since we were not aware of the many fun activities and good things that Uncle Jim did throughout his life We hope that we will see my cousins, aunts and uncles at the upcoming family reunion to be able to give them a hug.
Wishing family and friends peace and good memories.
