Irene E. Norstrom, of Mora, passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at GracePointe Crossing East Gables in Cambridge. She was 84 years old.
MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, January 12, 2018 at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Mora with Rev. Dean Oelfke officiating.
MEMORIAL VISITATION will be one hour prior to the service on Friday.
Irene Elizabeth Norstrom, 84, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2018 at Grace Point Crossing Gables East care center in Cambridge MN.
Irene was born July 12, 1933 in St. Cloud MN to Harvey and Emily (Emslander) Hommerding. She was the oldest of 12 children. Irene attended Cathedral High School in St. Cloud. Irene met Donald Norstrom and they married on February 17, 1968 in St. Cloud, MN. To this union 3 children were born in addition to 3 step children.
Irene and Don lived in Mora MN for most of their marriage. Irene was homemaker and daycare provider for many years. She and her family were members of Calvary Lutheran Church in Mora. Irene was an avid (some say professional) Bingo player and loved to go dancing. She was a second mom to many and always made sure her house was open to everyone.
In 1997 Irene suffered a heart attack and became a resident of Grace Point Crossing Gables East care center in Cambridge MN. For the next 20 years she was treated and cared for with compassion and care by their staff. She will be truly missed by all that knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her husband Don Norstrom, parents Harvey and Emily Hommerding, sister MaryAnn Thomsen, brothers Ronald (Humpy) Hommerding and Robert Hommerding, and step daughter Tracy Norstrom.
She is survived by her children Julie (John) Wakeman, David Norstrom, AJ (Katie) Norstom, Holly (Paul) Hiltunen and Teresa Smith; 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; brother Richard (Rosie) Hommerding; sisters Lorraine Nelson, Gerri (Jack) Staller, Karen (JR) Reed, Sandi Erickson, Patty (Gil) Umerski, Debbie (Doug) Pickartz, Pam Eidenschink; plus many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of caregivers at Grace Point Crossing Gables East care center for the love, compassion, and respect shown to Irene the past 20 years.
