AKKERMAN INGEBRAND FUNERAL HOME – MORA
Melvin Wicklund, of Mora, MN, passed away on Friday, February 3, 2017 at the FirstLight Health System in Mora. He was 97 years old.
FUNERAL SERVICE will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, February 10, 2017 at the Akkerman Ingebrand Funeral Home in Mora with Rev. Dean Oelfke officiating.
VISITATION will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
INURNMENT will be in the spring at the Oakwood Cemetery in Mora.
Melvin Leroy Wicklund was born in Willmar, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota on August 19, 1919 to Peter and Carrie (Westlund) Wicklund. He had two older brothers, Harold and Glen. His mother died from a flu epidemic when Melvin was only 18 months old so he was raised by his mother’s cousin, Florence Paulson in Dassel, Minnesota.
He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was severely wounded in Italy. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor and the Purple Heart. He spent more than 12 months in stateside VA hospitals enduring eight surgeries on his right arm. He taught himself to write, eat, and shave with his left hand as he had limited ability with his right arm. He remained a “lefty” for the rest of his life. He was active in the VFW for many years becoming a District Commander and then a State Commander.
In his late 30’s Melvin married Joan Mellberg. They were married for more than forty years. He worked at various jobs, retiring from Timesavers Inc. after more than 20 years of employment. Mel and Joan did some traveling, which they both enjoyed.
He passed away on Friday, February 3, 2017 at FirstLight Health System in Mora with his “girls” by his side. He was 97 years old.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Joan; son-in-law Dave Rodenborg; and brothers.
He is survived by his five children Leslie, Dave, Penny, Shannon (Daryle Ekleberry), Heidi; 3 grandchildren Jason, Daniel (Tricia), Jennifer; 4 great-grandchildren Annie, Karleigh, Kynleigh and Aubreigh; and niece Gloria Strom (Virgil).
