Paul was born on March 30, 1925 to parents Jens and Elna Jensen in Iowa City, Iowa. During the first eight years of Paul’s life, the family lived on farms in Iowa near Brighten, Elkorn and Exila. The family then moved to a farm located in Mora, Minnesota where Paul was raised and graduated from Mora High School in 1943. After graduation, Paul joined the Merchant Marines, where he was given the task of steering cargo ships across the Atlantic Ocean during the last two years of World War II.

Trips also included Acapulco and Hawaii, but their favorite trip came after retirement when they took a tour of Europe. Paul’s hobbies included fishing, playing pool, bowling, and playing cards.
