Florence Mattson, of Chaska, formerly of Mora, died on Monday, August 22, 2016. She was 97 years old.
FUNERAL SERVICE will be held on Saturday, August 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Hillman Baptist Church in rural Mora.
VISIATION will be one hour prior to the service from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church.
INTERMENT will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Mora.
Florence Luella (McCall) Mattson passed peacefully at her home in Chaska, MN with family at her side on August 22, 2016. She was 97 years old.
Florence was born October 3, 1918 to Francis and Elizabeth (Worley) McCall in Mora, MN. She grew up on the family farm in Arthur Township, Mora, MN. She graduated from Mora High School and attended Normal Training for school teachers in St. Cloud, MN. She was the teacher in two rural one room schoolhouses north of Mora, Wilkins School and Bean Brook School.
She married Elmer A. Mattson on April 14, 1942. They lived in Salt Lake City, Utah and Denver, Colorado. When he went overseas with the 42nd Rainbow Division, US Army, Florence again lived with her beloved family on their Mora farm. After WWII, Florence and Elmer lived in Chanhassen, MN then Excelsior, MN where they raised their six children. In 1978 they retired and built their home on a piece of the Leonard Mattson family farm in Hillman Township, Mora, MN.
Florence enjoyed reconnecting with friends and family in Mora. She and Elmer enjoyed going out, listening to music and dancing at the local clubs they had gone to in their dating years. Florence was active in the Hillman Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school classes and started a club that made baby quilts for each new baby born to the church community. She enjoyed painting, sewing, bird watching and nature’s beauty.
At age 80, Florence moved to the Woodcrest Apartments in Mora. She loved to walk downtown and especially enjoyed the walking trail at the Kanabec History Center. At age 90, Florence moved to Auburn Courts Assisted Living in Chaska, MN. She enjoyed the beautiful outdoor courtyard and visits from family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, 6 brothers, 7 sisters, her husband Elmer A. Mattson and their infant son, Daniel Greg Mattson.
Florence is survived by her children, James Mattson, Mary Ellen Good (Robert), Bruce Mattson (Jean), Leonard Mattson (Brenda), Julianne Mattson and Karen Mattson (James Murphy), 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, as well as many more extended family.
