GATHERING OF FRIENDS will be held on Monday, February 15th from 10:00-12:00 noon at Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home in Mora.
After a 13-month battle with metastatic lung cancer, Debra Ann (Bankers) Smith died on February 9, 2016 in Ogilvie, MN at the age of 59. She leaves behind her three children; Gabriel (Danielle Kieser) Pankonin, Rebecca (Chad) Baumann and Garey Pankonin.
Debra was born on October 26, 1956 in Mora, MN, to Raymond and Agnes (Tatro) Bankers. She grew up in a large, loving family with two sisters and two brothers. She graduated from Mora High School in 1974.
Debra and Dennis Pankonin were united in marriage January 22, 1976 in Northwood, Iowa and settled in Brook Park, MN until 1980 when they moved to Mora, MN. Here is where they raised their three children together until their divorce in 1990.
Debra was a dedicate professional with a love of crossword puzzles, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren. Debra was a long time employee of St. Clare Living Community (formerly known as the Villa Healthcare) in Mora. She thrived on the sense of being needed and was always doing for others, and helping those in need. She loved being a caregiver. It is what grounded her, and gave her purpose. When she wasn’t doing that, gardening or out shopping, you could find her spending time with her grandchildren. Many days were spent on short trips to the beach, to the park for a picnic lunch, or simply going for a walk and agate picking. When diagnosed with lung cancer in January of 2015, she remained dedicated to her family and her will to fight her illness. She remained a brave, iron-willed woman, even throughout her final weeks.
Debra is survived by her children and 5 grandchildren; Alexis Pankonin (15), Therian Baumann (15), Chad Baumann Jr (10), Daniel Baumann (6) and Olivia Pankonin (4 mo); brothers, Ted (Kim) Bankers and Steve (Sandy) Bankers; sisters, Paulette Bankers and JoAnn (Randy) Golly; as well as numerous other family members and friends.
She is preceded in death by her father Raymond.
