Merrill Ralph Claypool, age 97, of Braham, MN, died on Monday, October 19, 2015 at his home.

Merrill was born at home on March 20, 1918 in rural Underwood, MN to Clinton Wayne an Annie (Dess) Claypool. He attended country school until 1934 when the death of this mother during the depression, ended his schooling at the age of 16.  He worked at what jobs he could, until being called to serve in the Army Air Corp in Bakersfield, CA.  He was sent to Europe towards the end of WWII.  After his discharge in 1946, he attended Wahpeton, ND technical school and studied auto mechanics along with his brother Dan.  After completion, they both returned home to Underwood and opened their own garage.  It was during this period that Merrill met Ramona Martinson.  They were married on April 2, 1949.  They began a family while living in the Underwood area until 1955.  They then lived in various places until 1961 when they bought a home in Ham Lake.  Merrill worked at International Harvester in Minneapolis and continued to work until his retirement in 1980.  After his retirement, they bought an old house in rural Braham and restored it.  Merrill was very involved in volunteer work; driving for Isanti County and SACs in Cambridge.  Merrill took up bowling and it definitely gave him great pleasure.  He continued to bowl until the spring of 2015, rarely missing a Friday.

Merrill was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ramona, brother Dan and an infant sister, and granddaughter Bonnie Wallace.

He is survived by his sons, Don (Laurie) of Itasca, IL; Doug (Lislie) of Coon Rapids; Dick (Linda) of Bemidji; daughter Diane (Mike) Wallace of Braham; 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; brother Norman (Vivian) of Bemidji; sister Charlotte DeFrance of New Ulm; brother-in-law Harlow (Betty) Martinson of WA; sister-in-law Olive Marolt of TX; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
