Dorothy Mae Gnifkowski, of Stanchfield, Minnesota, passed away March 21, 2015 at GracePointe Crossing in Cambridge. She was 76 years old.

Dorothy was born May 30, 1938 at home in Stanchfield, Minnesota to Walter and Verna (Edwall) Anderson. As an only child, she grew up on the family farm, attended Stanchfield grade school, and then Braham High School through the 10th grade. After school she worked at the Fingerhut plant in Princeton until it burned down. She then moved to the plant in Gaylord before moving to St. Cloud when the St. Cloud plant opened. There she met Thomas Gnifkowski. They married November 6, 1963 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud and had two daughters, Judith and Ruth. Dorothy and Tom lived in St. Stephen for the first thirty years of marriage before moving back to Dorothy’s birthplace when Tom retired.

Dorothy was a very talented seamstress. Instead of an engagement ring, Dorothy selected a sewing machine which she used to sew her wedding dress that she wore on her wedding day. She was also a talented painter and in her later years, enjoyed crafting beautiful quilts and embroidered wall hangings. Dorothy gave generously of her time reaching out to help the elderly.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, and daughter Ruth.

She is survived by her husband Tom of Cambridge; daughter Judy (Jeffery) Backer of Browns Valley, MN; granddaughter, Brittany Backer; sisters-in-law, Jeanne (James) Kuffel of Kenosha, WI and Kathleen (Michael) O’Keefe of Minneapolis, MN; and cousins Dean (Cheryl) Leaf of Prior Lake and Kent (Patricia) Leaf of New Richmond, WI; many other relatives and friends.

  1. We are deeply saddened about the news of Dorothy. We got to know her thru St. Peter and Paul church. It was a pleasure visiting her at the farm. Dorothy loved to make quilts and it was always fun when she had another project she could show us. We will miss her deeply. Our prayers are with her family.

  2. Dear Tom and family,

Dorothy was always ready to help with circle work. Coffee Saturday after mass or helping with food for funerals.
    You will be remembered .
