Joel Kennedy, of Brook Park, died on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at his home. He was 76 years old.
MEMORIAL GATHERING will be from 2:00-4:00 P.M. on Monday, March 23rd at Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home. Luncheon will be served following the gathering at 4:00 p.m. at the Mora Masonic Lodge.
Memorials are preferred to the St. Croix Hospice, Mora Dollars for Scholars or your local Food Shelf.
Joel William Kennedy, age 76, passed away on March 18, 2015 after a long battle with prostate cancer.
Joel was born on November 21, 1938 to William and Mary (Pothen) Kennedy in rural Swift County, Minnesota. His life-long interest in farming developed there. He grew up a short distance away from his family of double cousins, who were like brothers and sisters to Joel and his siblings. He graduated from Murdock High School, earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Cloud State and a master’s degree from St. Thomas College. He was always proud of his service in the U.S. Navy.
Joel taught at Pine Technical College for many years while developing his farm. After retiring from teaching he happily took up full-time farming. He raised beef cattle and many birds, including peacocks.
Joel believed in community service. He volunteered for many groups, starting as a young man. He worked with several conservation and farm organizations, the Mora School Board, the Whited Township board, and the Kanabec County fair board.
Joel was preceded in death by his parents, brother Tim Kennedy and his double cousin Jerry Kennedy.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Linda; brother Robert (Mary) Kennedy of Baxter; sister Lu (Loren) Refsland of Blomkest; children, Laura Kennedy of St. Paul, Joel (Jane) Kennedy of Arden Hills Louisa (Kipton) Krueger of Brook Park, and Leah (Ryan) Lick of Mora; grandsons, Austin Lick, Owen Krueger, Maxwell Krueger, Peter Kennedy and Wilson Krueger; granddaughters, Jessica Kennedy and Ada Krueger; he is also survived by double cousins Rich (DeAnn) Kennedy of Herman, MN, Kay (Dave) Fredrickson of Roseville, Mary Sorenson of Minneapolis, Rose Hauge of St. Paul, Rita Kennedy of Hinckley and John (Janet) Kennedy of Spicer; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A memorial gathering was held Monday, March 23 from 2-4 at Akkerman-Ingebrand Chapel in Mora, followed by a meal at the Masonic Hall nearby. Memorials can be sent to St. Croix Hospice, Mora Dollars for Scholars or any food shelf. Arrangements are by the Akkerman Ingebrand Funeral Home of Mora.
