B. Vander Vegt webphotoBetty Vander Vegt, of Mora, formerly of Ogilvie, passed away on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at St. Clare’s Living Community in Mora.  She was 81 years old.

FUNERAL SERVICE will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mora.

VISITATION will be held from 5- 7 pm on Monday, August 11, 2014 at the Akkerman Ingebrand Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.

INTERMENT will be held at the Graceland Cemetery in Ogilvie.

MEMORIALS ARE PREFERRED TO St. Croix Hospice or Gideon’s International.

Betty Lou (Simmons) Vander Vegt, of Ogilvie, MN, died on Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at the St. Clare’s Living Community in Mora.  She was 82 years old.

Betty was born on January 4, 1932 in Washington State.  She was the fourth of five children.  As a young woman she met the love of her life, Henry Vander Vegt.  They were married on March 11, 1950 in Washington.

The couple settled in Emunclaw, Washington and began raising a family on the farm.  In the spring of 1964 they moved their five children back to Ogilvie where they began their own dairy farm.  Betty was also employed as a nurse’s aide at Sunshine Villa (Now St. Clare Living Community) of Mora for many years.  After 30 years of farming they sold the farm and moved to a different home near the Groundhouse River in Ogilvie.

They began spending their winters in Yuma, Arizona and living with son David in Minnesota during the summers.  Betty loved the outdoors, bird watching, fishing and flower and vegetable gardening.  She and Hank also loved to travel and camp with family and friends.

Betty was preceded in death bu her beloved husband Henry; her parents; half-brothers Jerry Gawley and Bob Simmons; and granddaughter Lisa Vander Vegt.

She is survived by her children Mary (Ron) Lundeen of Milaca, David (Rev. Vicki) of Pine City, Philip (Deborah) of Ogilvie, Donald of Ogilvie, Roger (Sharon) of Mora.  She is also survived by 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; siblings Alvera Larkin, Jack Simmons, Shirley James and Julie DeSmith; brothers-in-law Frederik (Eileen) Vander Vegt of Ogilvie, Jerry (Rose) Vander Vegt of Grand Rapids, MI; sisters-in-law Jeanette (Richard) Clark of Ogilvie, Bertha Vander Vegt of Mount Vernon, WA and Arlene Vander Vegt of Cambridge; plus many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, August 12 at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mora with Rev. Mike Herzog officiating.  Music was provided by Charlotte Elfstrom and Roger Vander Vegt.  Pallbearers were grandsons Daniel Pearson, Matthew Vander Vegt, Bradlee Vander Vegt, Justin Vander Vegt, Thomas Vander Vegt, Scott Vander Vegt, Russell Vander Vegt and Daniel Ingalls.  Honorary pallbearers were Betty’s granddaughters Tammi Hertenstein, Michelle Kinz, Jennifer Neel, Nichole Vander Vegt, Elizabeth Lundeen, Rebecca Christenson and Cherico Vander Vegt.  Interment was at Graceland Cemetery in Ogilvie.  Arrangements were handled by Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home of Mora.

  1. So sorry to hear about Betty’s death. Betty and I worked together at Sun Shine Villa nursing home years ago. We worked well together and still had our fun times too. I really enjoyed those day at SSV. Sharon Strandlund Cambridge,Mn.
