Richard Heald, of Blackduck, MN, formerly of Ogilvie, died on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at the Northern Pines Good Samaritan Home in Blackduck. He was 90 years old.
MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 5th at Ogilvie United Methodist Church.
MEMORIAL VISITATION will be held one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.
INURNMENT will be at Graceland Cemetery in Ogilvie.
Richard Austin Heald died on May 24, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Home in Blackduck, MN. He was 90 years old.
Richard was born April 20, 1924 in Ogilvie, MN to Ardo and Lucille (Mann) Heald. He grew up in Ogilvie and graduated from Ogilvie High School in 1942. During WWII he served in the U.S. Navy from September 8, 1944 until May 27, 1946. He was radar operator in the Navy and served in the South Pacific.
He married his wife Della Mae Geiger on January 11, 1947 and lived in Ogilvie, raising their two sons, Steve and Doug. He started working for the US Post Office in 1949 as a rural mail carrier and was appointed Postmaster of Ogilvie Post Office in March of 1954. He retired from the postal service in 1976 and then continued doing other jobs around Ogilvie, including working as bookkeeper for Hass Construction for 20 years.
He loved the game of baseball and spent many years pitching for town team baseball. He pitched for Quamba and Ogilvie in Class B and also for Danube in Class A. After baseball he also played softball for many years. Golfing became a passion for him later and he and his wife enjoyed many years of golf together.
He was a volunteer firefighter for the Ogilvie Fire Department and was an active member of the Ogilvie Legion. He enjoyed coin and stamp collecting and served as President of the East Central Minnesota Coin and Stamp Club. He enjoyed pheasant hunting and gardening. Richard and Della had a beautiful yard and garden with flowers everywhere at their home in Ogilvie. They lived in Ogilvie until 2003 when they moved to Northome, MN to be close to their son Steve when Della became very sick.
He was preceded in death by his wife Della in 2009; his son Doug in 1971; and his brother Dean and sister-in-law Delores Heald.
He is survived by his son Steve (Gail) from Northome, MN; two grandchildren Jason (Tara) Heald of Woodbury, MN and Jamie (Erik) Skoe of Northome, MN; five great-grandchildren Hunter, Nolan and Carrigan Heald of Woodbury, and Abigail and Lilianna Rosson of Northome.
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 5th at Ogilvie United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Pesola officiating. Music provided by Pat Frederick and Bryan Frederick. Military honors provided by Ogilvie American Legion Post #640. Inurnment will be at Graceland Cemetery in Ogilvie.
