Margaret Barnhart, of Mora, MN,  died on Friday, May 16, 2014 at Eastwood Senior Living in Mora.  She was 93 years old.

Margaret Nettie (Smith) Barnhart was born to Alfred and Nettie (Thompson) Smith on January 7, 1921 in their home in rural Mora, MN.  She attended several different country schools in Kanabec County completing 8th grade at Warman.  Margaret married Lester Barnhart on February 15, 1939.  They had 2 children, Eileen and Rodney.

Margaret was a housewife, and helped Lester and Rodney run their small dairy farm, milking cows by hand until 1973 when they sold the cows.  She had a huge garden each year that produced vegetables for themselves and many of the neighborhood families.  Flowers were important to decorate the yard and were found everywhere you looked.  In the later years she worked at Mora Public Schools as a matron and mentored many of our communities’ youth during the summer cleaning program.

Traveling with Lester and members of her church family was a highlight of her life.  Gathering with these friends and many others for “a bite to eat” at various area restaurants was such fun, and talked about frequently.  But above all, her strong faith in God led her through her entire life.  A member of St. John’s for over 50 years, Margaret was an active member in the LWML, working in the kitchen at most events.

Margaret was blessed to have been able to live at her residence north of Mora since 1948, moving to Eastwood Assisted Living in May of last year when her health no longer allowed her to live at home.  The Eastwood staff quickly made her feel at home and a member of the Eastwood family.  Margaret will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Margaret is preceded in death by her husband, Lester; daughter, Eileen Janousek; granddaughter, Virginia Janousek; her parents, Alfred and Nettie Smith; 3 brothers, Harry Smith, Archie Smith and Clarence Smith; 2 sisters, Myrna Bassett and Gladys Engstrom.

She is survived by her son Rodney (Rita) Barnhart; son-in-law Harold Janousek; grandchildren Jerome Janousek, Thomas Janousek, Deborah Janousek, Loretta Janousek, David (Sherry) Janousek, Paula (Travis) Jehlicka, and Lisa Oestreich all of Mora, and Michelle (Chris) Woida of St. Louis Park;  22 great grandchildren and 22 great-great grandchildren;  brother, Stanley Smith of Packwood, WA; brother and sister-in-law Arnold and Lee Barnhart of Detroit Lakes, MN; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 22 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kroschel, MN.  Rev. Greggory Coop will officiate.  Music will provided by Katie Williams. Pallbearers are Jerry Janousek, Thomas Janousek, Deborah Janousek, Loretta Janousek, David Janousek, Michelle Woida, Lisa Oestreich and Kevin Fratzke Jr.  Honorary pallbearer is Paul Jehlicka.  Interment was at St. John’s Cemetery in Kroschel.

Margaret was a very sweet soul. This was the Mother of my dear friend Eileen Janousek who passed away a few years ago. Eileen, her folds and I had coffee together many times, mostly at the Dala Cafe or Grandma’s Kitchen. God bless her and my condolences to the family.
