Clarence “Robby” Robertson of Mora, MN passed away April 18, 2014. He was 94 years old.  Robby was born September 14, 1919 in Carlton, MN.  He grew up in Ely, MN where he attended High School and Ely Community College.  He played tackle on the first Ely Community College football team, nicknamed “the 11 Strong Men” and they were undefeated conference champions.  As a young man he would guide visitors on fishing trips on Fall Lake and Basswood Lake near Ely.

Robby joined the Army in 1940 and served until 1945 as part of the 34th Infantry Division.  He drove troops and equipment to the front lines and was stationed in Ireland, North Africa, and Italy.  He was first introduced to his wife through a military letter writing campaign. He married Eleanor Johnson from Eveleth, MN in 1946 in a union that ended with the passing of Eleanor on their 66th wedding anniversary in 2012.

Most of his career was as a dispatcher and payroll clerk for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad.  Some of his life highlights included attending game 7 of both the 1987 and 1991 World Series and sitting in a suite with his family at the Twins game on his 70th birthday. He loved spending time with family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, attending their school and church events. It gave him great joy to do this and he was very proud of them all. Most special was his faith in God, demonstrated by how he lived his life, his commitment to family, and a strong belief in the power of prayer. He prayed daily for each family member.

Robby is preceded in death by his wife Eleanor, parents Gustaf and Hulda, sister Lois Engel, and brothers Wilfred and Harold Robertson.

He is survived by 3 sons and 1 daughter; Doug (Deborah) Robertson of Springfield, MN, Sandra (Tim) Warren of Brooklyn Park, MN, Gordy (Ruth) Robertson of Plymouth, MN, Curt (Laurel) Robertson of Mora, MN; 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

I got to know Robbie when I took care of Ellie at the nursing home.
Robbie loved to talk about Ellie and his family, he was very proud of them. Whether his stories were about family, fishing or just stories about “back in the day”, I loved hearing them all. His smile and laughter always brightened my day and I do miss them.
Even when he was not feeling well himself, he was there to see his Ellie everyday. What a devoted and loving husband he was.
It was such a great privilege to get to know both Robbie and Ellie and I will miss them both.
    My condolences to his family.

    Lori Johnson
