James Joseph King, Jr., of Coon Rapids, Minnesota, passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2014 in Cambridge, Minnesota. He was 87 years old.
James was born on June 23, 1926 in Chicago, IL to James and Mary (Brennan) King. After his mother passed away when he was very young, he was taken in and raised by his mother’s sister and her husband, Beatrice and William Coyle along with their children, Bill (William Jr) and Mary, in North Minneapolis. James was a very responsible child and it was his job to shovel the coal into the furnace to warm the family home. He was industrious and from a young age he was employed delivering papers and ice. He took pride that he brought home half of all his earnings to his Aunt Bea to help provide for his care. He went on to work with his Uncle William at the Post Office before he joined the United States Navy at the age of 18. He was stationed along the west coast and travelled aboard the USS Bollinger (APA-234) as a Quartermaster. He sailed across the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii, Guam, and Iwo Jima and Okinawa Japan. He returned home and took a job at PAKO where he would eventually retire after 44 years of employment. James enjoyed old time country music and for a brief time he traveled with a country band to several small town “beer joints” throughout northern Minnesota. He married LaDonna Dolbec in 1963. He was a wonderful provider to her and father figure to her two children Michael and Debra. He built them a lovely home in Coon Rapids and through the years he traveled on many road trips with LaDonna. When LaDonna took ill, James cared for her day and night. He was an exceptionally devoted husband, rarely leaving her side while she was in and out of the nursing home for over two years before her passing. James became ill in 2009 and moved between his home and the nursing home for a year while being lovingly cared for by his daughter Debra. In 2010, James moved with grandson, Joe Graves, to live out his final years on West Rush Lake in Stanchfield, MN. James enjoyed the interaction with his grandchildren and great grandchildren and the beautiful sunrises over the lake. He also was grateful for the exceptional care provided to him by his care team from Guardian Angels, especially Tricia and Debra.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Uncle William, Aunt Bea, wife LaDonna, and great grandson BoDean.
He is survived by his son Michael and daughter Debra, grandchildren Joe (Wendy), Nathan, Chrisshane, Cody, Jennifer and Patrick as well as several great grandchildren.
A Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at the Calvary Ev. Lutheran Church in Rush Point with Rev. Keith Kolzow officiating. Music was provided by Janice Johnson. Honorary Casket Bearers are his great grandchildren Vanessa, Victoria, Willow, Grace, Cecilia, Noah and Nicholas. Interment was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
