Harold Jack Shonyo, of Mora, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at the United Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota.  He was 78 years old.

Harold was born on January 29, 1936 in Lampson, Wisconsin to parents Homer “Jack” and Grace (Mullenix) Shonyo.  He grew up on the family farm and attended a one room school house as a child.  When Harold was seven years old, the family moved to Wrenshall, Minnesota.  As a young adult, Harold helped his family on the farm raising Swiss Dairy Cows, and growing and shipping cabbage to Ironwood, Michigan.  In 1965, the family purchased a farm in Mora and continued the dairy operation and also raised beef cattle for sale.  After Harold’s parent’s deaths, he continued to run the farm for the next 30 years until his health forced him to sell the cattle.   Besides farming, Harold also worked part-time at East Central Livestock in Mora for over 25 years.  He enjoyed the work and the people he met.

Harold led the life of a bachelor, but enjoyed many hobbies.  He loved sports, especially basketball, but would watch almost any game he could find.  Harold liked to listen to old country music and always had the radio in the barn tuned to country.  Harold loved his treats, always having candy or ice cream on hand.  He liked to pass the time by playing solitaire, and could wear out a deck of cards from so much use.  Harold loved his family and was often the host of family get together’s at the farm.  He will be missed dearly.

Harold is preceded in death by his parents and younger brother Russell.

He is survived by his silbings; June Galatz of Wrenshall; Mary Mitchell of Cloquet; Albert (Jean) Shonyo of Big Lake; Carolyn (Larry) Matykiewicz of New Braunfels, TX; Marion (Jack) Bergstrom of Inver Grove Heights; Margaret (David) Levenhagen of Ellsworth, WI; Donald (Diana) Shonyo of Elk River; sister-in-law, Cindy Shonyo of Cedar; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A Memorial Service was held on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at the Akkerman Ingebrand Funeral Home in Mora with Rev. Bob DeYoung officiating.  A private inurnment was at the Oakwood Cemetery in Mora.  Arrangements are by the Akkerman Ingebrand Funeral Home.
