“Rasty” Melvin Thorson, of Henriette, died on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at his home. He was 83 years old.
MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at 11:00 am. Saturday, Dec. 21 2013 at Grace Lutheran Church in Mora with Rev. Douglas Larson officiating.
MEMORIAL VISITATION will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
INURNMEMT will be held at a later date.
Melvin, aka Rasty, Thorson, of Henriette, MN died suddenly on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at the age of 83.
Rasty was born June 10, 1930 in Comfort Township, Kanabec County, Minnesota to Oscar and Laura (Evenson) Thorson, the fourth of six children. He grew up in Henriette where he attended the local school and completed the eighth grade. He then attended Pine City High School, graduating in 1948. While attending high school he participated in football and baseball. He then began his ‘work world’ as an Engineering Tech with the State of Minnesota; and later with Pine County, while also taking engineering classes at Dunwoody Institute. During the time he was working for the State he was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps where he served his country for two years obtaining the rank of Sergeant, 1st Class.
In 1966 he began working for Johnson Brothers Construction Company where he worked until retirement. During this time his work took him to many locations throughout the country. While working in Ohio he met Marilyn Radloff who became the love of his life and his lifelong companion.
Rasty enjoyed participating in baseball, enjoying his position as a short stop with some of the local teams: Mora, Quamba and Pine City. Later in life he took up the game of golf which he enjoyed almost every day.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Orville and Philip; and sister Margy Broberg.
Rasty is survived by his sister Barbara (James) Barbo and brother Oscar (Rose) Thorson Jr.; beloved friend Marilyn Radloff; plus several nieces, nephews, and friends.
A Memorial service was held on Saturday, December 21, at Grace Lutheran Church in Mora with Rev. Douglas Larson officiating. Music was provided by Jacki Peterson. Honorary Urn Bearers were Steve Barbo, Gary Barbo, Heidi Hatfield, Laura Nelson, Donald Thorson, Dennis Holmstrom, Martha Harrison, Diane Clark and Michael Broberg. Military Honors were provided by the Mora American Legion Post 201. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Henriette Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home in Mora.
