Gayle Louise Ek, of Stanchfield, passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2013. She was 97 years old.
FUNERAL SERVICE will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at the Stanchfield Baptist Church with Pastor Ki Gulbranson officiating.
VISITATION will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
INTERMENT will be in the South Maple Ridge Cemetery.
Gayle Louise Ek, of Stanchfield, passed away on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at her home. She was 97 years old.
Gayle was born on January 20, 1916 in Stanchfield Township to parents Charles and Frances (Peterson) Mattson. She attended grade school at the Pine Cone District 41 country school and went on to Braham High School, graduating with the class of 1935. After completing school, Gayle lived with an aunt in California for a short time before returning to Minnesota where she worked as a clerk for the Farmers Home Administration at the Isanti County Courthouse. Gayle took a job with the USDA, working in both Glencoe and Pine City for a number of years.
In February of 1954, Gayle was united in marriage to Albert “Bert” Ek. Together the couple built a home in Stanchfield. After Bert passed away in 1969, Gayle returned to work as a book keeper for Production Credit in Cambridge and worked for many years before retiring. Gayle continued to live in her Stanchfield home until her death with the help and loving care from Theresa Anderson and Heidi Mattson.
Gayle was a globetrotter and made four different trips to England and Scotland and also several European countries. Her most memorable trip was when she and Bert loaded up the pickup camper and drove the Alcan Highway to Alaska. Gayle’s favorite spot to visit was the Minnesota North Shore and enjoyed many trips to Grand Marais. Gayle was an avid reader throughout her life. In her younger years she enjoyed bowling, and being a part of the Rum River Saddle Club where she rode her horse in many shows riding square dancing routines with her horse. Gayle is preceded in death by her parents; husband Albert; siblings Glenn, Meyer, Myra, Charles “CJ” Mattson, and Marjorie Gerdin; nephew Craig Mattson; nieces Kari and Sharon Gerdin.
She is survived by her sisters, Beverly Johnson of Cambridge and Helen Mae Pederson of Braham; many nieces and nephews in the Mattson, Gerdin, Ek, and Haley families; along with numerous other relatives and friends.
A Funeral service was held on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at the Stanchfield Baptist Church with Ki Gulbranson officiating. Music was provided by Ann Schaeffer, and Les and Meredith Gerdin. Casket Bearers were Alan Ek, Jay Gerdin, Chip Gerdin, Barry Seals, Dan Haley, Mike Haley, John Telstad, and Terrance Walfoort. Honorary Casket Bearers were Gary Nies and David Gerdin. Interment was in the South Maple Ridge Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the Stanchfield Baptist Church or the South Maple Ridge Cemetery Association. Arrangements were by the Rock Ingebrand Funeral Home of Braham.
