Ronald Louis Hendershot, of Mora, passed away on Thursday, August 15, 2013 at the St. Cloud Hospital. He was 89 years old.
Ronald was born on March 26, 1924 in the family home in Knife Lake Township. He was united in marriage to Millie Blowers in a candlelight service at Grace Lutheran Church at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, April 6, 1944. They were the parents of four children: Connie, Judy, Jess and Tyrone.
Ron served in the Navy in World War II. He was very proud of being a Veteran and serving to protect our country. He was discharged on December 29, 1945. He received the Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism displayed in action against the Japanese forces in the Pacific ashore and afloat. He served in seventeen major engagements.
When he came home from the Navy, Ron worked for the Kanabec County Cooperative Association for many years as a mechanic and then became the manager in the service and sales area. Ron and his family lived in Mora for many years and then purchased the family farm just outside of Mora and began farming and raising cattle in addition to his day-time job. For many years he had his own business called Ronnie’s Signs where he made and hand-lettered signs on buildings as well as vehicles and roadside billboards. After retiring, Ron again started a small business which he ran out of the shop on their farm called Ron’s Repair. He did a lot of small engine and chainsaw repair as well as chainsaw sharpening. His main love in life was his wife, Millie and all his children. He loved hunting (at age 87 he shot an 8 point buck!), duck hunting, fishing, camping and telling tall tales, as well as going to flea markets and garage sales. Kids would be fascinated to hear some of the stories he told. Ron and Millie loved to go dancing and taught all four kids how to dance. He loved the family get-togethers of which there were many for birthdays, anniversaries, etc. He especially loved the 4th of July parties at his son, Jess’ house. The family would get together for the entire day with food, laughter, games and have a fireworks show in the evening. Ron took a lot of pictures all the time of everything for his memories. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Myrtle Hendershot; brothers, Pete and A.J.; sister, Mitzi Telander; his son, Tyrone; his daughter, Connie; his granddaughter, Cindy.
He is survived by his wife, Millie; son, Jess (Tammy) Hendershot; daughter, Judy (Terry) Stolquist; son-in-law, Gary Caswell; Seven Grandchildren; Seven Great-Grandchildren; Two Great-Great-Grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Mora with Rev. Dean Oelfke officiating. Music was provided by Sonja Cole. Casket Bearers were Terry Stolquist, Bart Stolquist, Jake Stolquist, Lucas Hendershot, Colt Pfaff, and Brett Caswell. Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery in Mora.
