Sgt. Jennifer Mae Nielsen, of Mora, Minnesota, passed away unexpectedly the morning of August 10, 2013.  She was 27 years old.

Jennifer, lovingly known as “Nifer”, was born in Fridley, Minnesota on July 4, 1986 to parents Todd and Becky (Mortenson) Nielsen.  She moved to Mora, Minnesota with her family in 1997.  Her true lasting friendships developed when they settled into this small close knit community.   Throughout elementary and high school, Nifer put her musical talents to good use by playing many instruments in the school band.  She was also vested in the high school drama productions.  If she wasn’t singing and dancing for the audience, you could find her behind the scenes giving support and keeping things under control for her fellow thespians.

After her graduation for Mora High School in 2004, Nifer enrolled in the Anoka Ramsey Community college.  It was only a short time before she decided she wanted to follow her dreams and finish school at a later time in life.  The United States Marine Corp was her true calling and she enlisted as an active member.  During her 7 years in the USMC, she deployed to Africa, Iraq, and Romania.  She traveled the world and created bonds with her comrades that were as strong as family ties.

Nifer was preceded in death by her grandfather Ronald A. Mortenson.

She is survived by her mother, Becky Nielsen; father, Todd Nielsen; sister Kristy Nielsen; brother, Christopher Nielsen; grandmother, Betty Mortensen; her “4 little freaks”, Taytum, Levi, Kennedy, and Lindsey Klink; and niece Amaya Nielsen (who she didn’t know nearly long enough); as well as many other relatives and friends.

You also had the respect of so many of your fellow Marines who knew how hard you worked during BSRF-11. I’m happy I got to meet your family before you passed because you talked often about your Mom and your freaks and how much you loved them. 21. Becky,

My heart goes out to you and your family! I was very sad when I heard the news. I have very fond memories of Nifer. I remember when she would come over to her Grandma and Grandpa’s house and then her and Christopher would come over and see if it was time to feed the twins! They loved feeding them their bottles! She was always so funny! Stay strong!

  22. I didn’t know Nifer long, but I’ll always appreciate her help in getting me back to visit my mother. Also for the cares that she & Mary gave me at Gracepointe East. My sympathy to her family.

  27. I had the pleasure of hearing about Niffer frequently on our way home from work at Grandview care center, My husband (Mervin) and Niffer worked on the same unit, although I am not sure how much of work they considered work as I often heard about the fun they had, many laughs and memories shared. I do know my Buddy adored Niffer and often said how she always came to work with the brightest smile, ready to work and truly enjoyed helping others. My deepest sympathy to all of you.

  28. I am so sorry for you loss, I had the privilege of serving with Nifer in the United States Marine Corps, she was an amazing individual and a amazing Marine she will be greatly missed!

  29. My heart is filled with great sorrow for you and your family members. I pray that they will find peace and that you will rest in piece my friend. I deployed to Iraq and Romania with you and must say it was an honor to do so. I will always think of you and smile my goofy friend :) Niffer, you will always be remembered fondly by us all. Semper Fi Marine. I know you will guard the gates of heaven and do so with Honor, Courage and Commitment. OOH RAH!

  30. To Nifer’s parents.
I served with that crazy blonde goof ball in Romania in 2011, and she had become a part of me as did all my friends did over there in time. She touched all of our hearts in some way or another and will live immortality through her actions as a outstanding Marine and her heart as a beautiful person. I will now never be able to look at Reeces peanut butter cups again without thinking of her silly self in how Jake Perry and all of us would laugh at how she said it in her northern talk.
Enjoy your break while you can girl, because we are all hitting the karaoke bar after we all regoup!!!

    See you later girlly.
    Simper Fi.

  31. Nifer, From the day I met you, you have never ceased to amaze me. Your spirit, your drive is something that I’ll never forget. My mind is swollen with fond memories of you, from that infectious giggle, to you getting the hang of the hat tricks I taught you. You were the girl with the can-do attitude, scaling the side of the 7-Tons with the rest of us. There was no job that was ever to big, even helping in the maintenance shop once or twice. The BSRF-11 operation for me personally, would have not been the same. You were the only one I’d ever let publically call me “Benji,” or play tic-tac-toe on my head with clippers while cutting my hair (as well as making other shapes on my head that will remain nameless, all in good fun). Even after I sprained my ankle that one time playing basketball, I still laughed with you until I was a “tickled-pink” and in complete pain. You touched the hearts and the lives of many Marines and Corpsman during that time, offering unbiased friendship and honest advice. You enjoyed our mix of musical diffusion, between Alfords Country, Kims Dubstep, Johnsons Rap/Hip-hop, Riveras Spanish music and my Rock and Reggae. I remembered you playing Alfords Guitar. From “National Dancing” with the locals, and other Marines break dancing in Dany Anys, and dancing Bachata. You were a friend on and off duty and involved every step of the way. All of us shared a love of family, and you always mentioned them especially your “freaks”. It was an honor to have served with you and to be your friend. Semper Fi.

  32. I’m sorry for the loss of your wonderful daughter. She was a JOY to work alongside at Gracepointe. She brought a smile to all of her residents and coworkers. God bless you and may god heal your pain.

  33. It’s never easy to cope with the passing of a fellow Marine especially so young. My prayers, thoughts, and love go out to her family, and friends. From the few times I interacted with you, I could tell you possessed confidence, tact and initiative. You knew your MOS and had a radiant smile. The Det Alpha Marines trusted and respected you from what I observed. Rest easy Sergeant.

    Semper Fi.

  34. Dear family of Nifer, I know how much these words written by family and friends meant to me and my family on the passing of my mother so I hope they are a blessing and comort to you as well. I worked with Nifer for a short time and during that time I especially enjoyed her “Yes Maam” every time I asked her to assist me in some way. Her way of doing her job would often include a special trait (which sounds like it was true to her) and that was her ability to make us smile. I am so sorry dear family for your loss and my prayers are with you during this difficult time. Please know that even though I knew your daughter/sister/friend for only a short time, I have been blessed by her and her life that she shared so freely.

  35. Nifer, I honestly dont know what to say or where to start. We met in Romania during our deployment. You were very helpful, friendly, funny, and caring. The times I got to spend time with you were one of the best. Off course my favorite time was the day we waited for the sunrise st Black Sea. I will never forget that moment. I was really hoping that someday I would get to see you in another deployment or even in Romania again. I miss you :(

  36. I am deeply saddened by this news. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family in this difficult time. While I didn’t have the good fortune to know her well, I knew after working with her for a short time that she was one of the best Marines I’ve had the pleasure of working with. There wasn’t a task she left undone and she had the respect of everyone from the top down. May she forever rest in peace, god bless and Semper Fidelis.

  37. I had the pleasure of meeting (at the time) Cpl Neilsen on BSRF-11. She knew how to make people smile. She will be missed. It was a honor meeting her.

“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.”

  38. I was so sad when I heard the news of your passing Nifer. I had no idea it had happened and that made it even worse. So many good memories went through my mind. There was never a day you would not be smiling or wearing something crazy. You were your own person and that made so many people adore and love you. My deepest sympathy goes out to your family. You will never be forgotten and will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved you.

  39. My thoughts, love and prayers are with Jennifer’s “Nifer’s” family and friends. I didn’t really know Nifer all that well but I did know her and her family for 23 years. I know that she was a great and loving aunt and sister. I know she was a proud Marine. I am lucky and proud to have known her even if it wasn’t all that well. I am so sorry the world lost a true hero. We love you guys.

  40. To Nifer’s family:
I am very sorry for your loss. I pray that you may find peace and comfort. Nifer was a wonderful person, a very hard worker, and an excellent Marine. She was lots of fun to be around and brightened everyone’s day. She always talked about her family and how much she loved you. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

  41. Sorry for your loss. She was a great classmate. She always had a smile on her face and now god will take good care of you. She will be missed deeply. R.I.P. Nifer and thanks for fighting for our country….

  42. I struggled for a few days not knowing what to say. I know I can’t say anything that makes it “better” so to speak, and being a fix-it type person (as Nifer was!), that’s hard for me.

Then I saw the set up just before visitation outside the funeral home. Tears came down my face, and then that instant I realized it. Nifer was fabulous. It breaks my heart that she is gone. But at the same time I am so very VERY thankful that she touched so many people so much. She made so many people smile, which is the greatest gift you can give. She always encouraged me, listened to my ranting, and told me I was full of it when I was. She was so insanely supportive, and she really made a difference in my life in high school.

So while I can’t fix it, I did decide that I definitely wanted to share the difference she made, that her smile was infectious and her laugh always resulted in me laughing, too. I am another person who Nifer had a profound impact on, and I hope that in midst of the pain there is some joy in hearing that. My thoughts are sincerely with you at this time –

  43. So many things to say, but I can’t really find the words. Nifer, you touched so many lives and were such a positive influence on so many people.
We had Britney Vs Christina dance-offs during 5th hour independent study. And so many awesome conversations.
And a few years ago you came into my life again, and I am so greatful for that. Your laugh, humor and love for your family will always remain with me. You meant so much to so many. I know that you’re in a much better place now, but that still doesn’t take the pain of your loss away…
You were so dedicated to your family and your country. Rest well, Nifer. We will see you again, and you won’t be forgotten.
    Miss you.
