Reynold Mauritz Holmberg, age 96, passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at home surrounded by his family.

Reynold was born April 2, 1917 in Rock Creek, Minnesota to Swedish immigrant parents Erik and Alma (Swanson) Holmberg.

He attended the Rock Creek country school. After the 8th grade he worked on the family farm. As a young man, he owned a truck route hauling milk to the local creamery, and cattle to South St. Paul, sometimes making three trips to the stockyards in one day. In 1941, he went to work for Donovan Construction building power lines in the early days of the REA. He joined East Central Electric in 1946 as a lineman and worked there until his retirement in 1980.  In those early years they did storm duty for days at a time sleeping in the truck every so often for an hour or two. He also recalled energizing the Braham substation for the very first time on Christmas Eve and watching at least part of the town light up as never before.

On April 1, 1941 he was married to Lorraine Holmberg in Pine City, Minnesota. Following was 72 plus years of great care and companionship.

Rey was an active member of Braham Evangelical Lutheran Church, served on the Braham Village Council, the Braham Volunteer Fire Department, drove school bus, and caringly tended to the Rice Creek Cemetery.

Reynold is preceded in death by his parents; 6 brothers; 2 sisters; 2 daughters, Phyllis Catherine Moller and Mary Jane Severson; and one grandson, Christopher Olson.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; sister, Carol Skalicky; two daughters, Judy (Dennis) Olson and Karen Brown, both of Braham; three sons, Lyle (Rita) of Madison, CT, Rick (Becky) of Fargo, ND, and Tim (Barb) of Cambridge, MN; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Reynold especially loved his family and friends and lived his life with a kind and gentle spirit.

A Funeral Service was held on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at the Braham Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastors Dave Everett and Rick Holmberg officiating.  Music was provided by Ruth Grundyson, Joe Holmberg and Erik Holmberg. Inurnment will be held at a later date at the Rice Lake Cemetery.

Reynold introduced me to the “in’s and out’s” of the meter reading business years ago. Where not to put your fingers was 1st on the list of items. He seemed to be able to calm the air around a storm. Never seeming to let anything bother him. A true gentle soul. Thank you Reynold, for happy memories at ECE.
