She attended School District 41 through the eighth grade, went to Mora High School and graduated in 1941. She then attended Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis until January 1942, when she came back to Mora to take a job as Deputy County Treasurer for Basil Irwin. Dorothy loved to cook. She often entertained family and relatives at Holiday and Birthday dinners. She liked to enter recipe contests and won a few prizes. She also loved reading and traveling. She and her husband traveled to many states in the U.S. and also Mexico and Canada. In 1982 they made a trip to the Scandinavian countries where they visited the birthplace of Dorothy’s ancestors in Venjan near Mora, Sweden. In 1995 she traveled to England to visit her brother John who was teaching there for a year. In 1994 Alvin and Dorothy sold their farm and moved to Milaca until 2000 when they returned to Mora and moved to the Dala Apartments.
