Naomi Martin, formerly of Mora, died on Wednesday, June 20th at the Annandale Care Center in Annandale, MN. She was 83 years old.
A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held on Saturday, June 23 at 3:00 p.m. at Akkerman-Ingebrand Chapel.
INURNMENT will be at a later date at Malmo Cemetery in Malmo.
Naomi Jean Martin was born in Verdel, Nebraska on March 9, 1929 to Thomas and Hilda (Linquist) Durkee. When she was only 3 years old, the family moved to Mitchell, South Dakota. There she went through the 1st and 2nd grades. After that the family moved quite frequently as the depression years took their toll. In the fall of 1937 they moved to Minnesota. In 1944 her parents sold everything and moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Naomi and her sister Ruth attended high school at God’s Bible School. During that time she met Paul Martin. They were eventually married on June 8, 1948.
Paul and Naomi decided to move back to Minnesota where they both worked and Paul attended St. Cloud College. After getting his degree he taught school in Finlayson, Lewis Lake country school, and Mora.
During this time Naomi stayed home to raise their three sons. She enjoyed baking, cooking, canning and mending. She loved music and was talented on the piano, accordion and organ. Naomi was the church pianist and sang in the choir for years. She always enjoyed helping with programs in school and church. The entire family enjoyed traveling, camping and just having fun.
Naomi was preceded in death by her husband Paul in 2001; and her parents Thomas and Hilda Durkee.
She is survived by three sons Mark (Ruth Elaine) Martin, Steve (Lynn)Martin, and Jonathan (Cheryl) Martin of St. Cloud. Also surviving are six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sister Ruth (LaVern) Scrabeck of Dixon, Missouri; and one nephew, Joel (Nina) of Missouri.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, June 23rd at Akkerman-Ingebrand Chapel in Mora. Rev. Donald Still officiated. Inurnment was at Malmo Cemetery next to her husband and parents.
