Ethel L. (Dalbey) Beckman of Mora, Minnesota, passed away on January 24, 2012.  She was 84 years old.

Ethel was born to Molly (Wilcox) and Earl Dalbey on January 11, 1928 in Mora, Minnesota.  She spent most of her childhood in the Mora area.  The family settled north of Mora on the Snake River.  She attended Northwestern College and McPhail School of Performing Arts.  Ethel was a trained concert pianist.  Ethel married Marlowe Beckman in 1954. She traveled with Marlowe to Texas when he was stationed there during his military service.  The first of their four children was born in 1963. They bought farmland from Earl and Molly Dalbey (Ethel’s parents) around 1964.

Music was Ethel’s daily companion. She shared her gift of music at Emmanuel Baptist Church. She also taught piano lessons.  Many people came to Ethel’s home to learn, practice and perform several styles of music.  In the sixties, Ethel and Marlowe founded the Singing Youth for Christ (SYC). This singing group was an interdenominational choir of high school and college students.  SYC performed, traveled and even recorded an album. That album was recorded in the Beckmans’ living room.

Ethel’s musical knowledge of range, fundamentals and process far exceeded most pianists.  She was always ready to teach and laugh and paint the scene with her music.  Ethel was also a talented seamstress. She sketched her wedding dress from a display window. The gown was later sewn by her sister, Ardis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and one grandchild, Nicholas.

Ethel is survived by two daughters: Deb Beckman of Braham, and Terrie Rath of Bismarck, ND; two sons: Nat Beckman of Mora, and Bart (Nancy) Beckman of Hinckley.  She also leaves behind eight grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
