Wallace Karl Mauritz Johnson, of Mora, Minnesota, passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at the VA Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.  He was 79 years, 10 months, and 24 days old.
Wallace was born on October 1, 1931 in Birch Creek Township, Pine County, Minnesota to Karl Oscar Waldemar and Florence (Person) Johnson.  As an infant Wallace was baptized at the Faith Lutheran Church in Denham, Minnesota.  His sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Joel Erlandson.  Wallace attended first through third grades in Denham before they moved in 1940 to Brunswick with his family where they farmed.  Wallace continued his education at Lewis Lake Country School where he completed all grades through eighth grade.  While living in Brunswick Wallace was confirmed at the Brunswick Lutheran Church in April of 1946.  In 1947 Wallace’s family moved to Bloomington, Minnesota because his father had bought a cement business.  That is where Wallace learned all his masonry knowledge that he continued to use through out his life.  In 1951 he graduated from Bloomington High School, Bloomington, Minnesota.  Shortly afterward, on July 9, 1951, he enlisted in the United States Air Force.  The main part of his duty was spent in Germany as a metal urgist where he came to find extended relatives in Sweden, which he visited multiple times during his tour in Germany.  Wallace was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force on July 8, 1955.  He then returned home to Bloomington, Minnesota.  Wallace was not one for living in the city so he soon moved back north to Brunswick to live with his sister Victoria Anderson while he worked at the Central Motor Chevy dealership as a mechanic.  It was then that Wallace became reacquainted with Majal Ione Cirpinski.  They had attended school together at the Lewis Lake Country School years before.  After dating for some time Wally proposed to Majal at The Frost Top Root Beer stand in Mora, Minnesota.  They were married on June 2, 1957 in Zion Lutheran Church in Mora, Minnesota.  After their marriage Majal and Wallace moved into Majal’s home place west of Brunswick where they started milking cows and continued to work off the farm.  Wallace and Majal milked cows on this farm for 40 years while he had many different jobs off the farm including masonry, truck driver, milk hauler, hardware store worker, and senior citizen bus driver.  Wallace enjoyed wood working also.  He was active in the Kanabec County Conservation Club, the Lewis Lake Country School Board, and serving in his church.  Wallace was integral in starting the Second Harvest food distribution in the Mora area along with working for the Fare for All food program.
In his free time Wally enjoyed deer hunting with his family, wood working and he loved to teach his grandkids new things.  Wallace also loved to travel and he was able to make a trip back to Germany and Sweden in 1979 with his wife Majal to visit family.
Wallace was preceded in death by his parents, twin sisters Victoria Anderson and Virginia Johnson, sister Marilyn Lebens, and infant twin granddaughters Jessica and Jenae Johnson.
Wallace is survived by his wife Majal; children Wade (Carol) Johnson of Mora, Zane (Janet) Johnson of Hinckley, Karna (Jon) Knapp of Braham, and Troy E. Johnson of Mora.  Grandchildren Jasmine Johnson, Jennifer Johnson, Jacob Johnson, Allison Knapp, Lucas Johnson, Pierce Bernecker, Heidi Johnson, Jonathan Carter, Benjamin Johnson, Zeb Johnson, Caleb Johnson, Vanessa Carter, Shanda Johnson, Timothy Johnson, Adrian Johnson, Kelsey Knapp, Amorette Johnson, and Bella Johnson.  Great-grandson Jaxson Lind and one great-granddaughter due in October.  Brother Lowell Johnson of Bloomington; and sister Bernyce Wagner of Mesa, AZ.  He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.  His loving presence will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Ogilvie with Rev. Marc Freiberg officiating.  Music was provided by Connie Odendahl.  Casket Bearers were Peirce Bernecker, Lucas Johnson, Benjamin Johnson, Caleb Johnson, Troy Johnson, Timothy Johnson, Jacob Johnson, Zeb Johnson, Jonathan Carter, and Adrian Johnson.  Interment was in the Faith Cemetery of Denham, Minnesota.  Arrangements are by the Akkerman Ingebrand Funeral Home of Mora.  Condolences may be posted at www.aifuneralhome.com

  1. Majal and Family, What a nice write up about Wally and your family history. Majal, I will never forget and will forever be grateful for the role Wally and you both had in immediately helping my dad, then me and my family after my dad’s farm accident in 1968. Wally lived a full life yet I am sorry for your loss. See you Tues. Please let me know if you need anything, even if just a break from all that goes with this or some produce from the garden. Know too, that you are loved and watched over. Bruce Arnold
