Helen Rose Olsen died Monday, October 25, 2010 at the Aitkin Health Care Services in Aitkin, Minnesota.

She was born on May 14, 1932 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Frank and Antonia Zakowski. She was the youngest of three daughters. Helen grew up in Northeast Minneapolis and married her childhood sweetheart Waldemar Olsen on February 24, 1951. Together the couple had three daughters, Kathleen Frances, Linda Marie, and Helenann.

She moved to Fridley in 1965 when Wally became a Fridley policeman. This was just in time to experience the terrible tornado outbreak, the worst in Fridley history.

I can remember her herding us down the basement and making us cover up with old mattresses, then dousing us with holy water, while staying tuned in with WCCO on a transistor radio and her saying Hail Mary’s.

Helen moved to McGregor, Minnesota when Wally retired in 1984 and eventually moved to Mora to be nearby more modern conveniences.

She loved her dogs, playing bingo, and spending time at the cabin with her grandsons Jimmy and Chris. She was the one who put the first fishing pole in Jimmy’s hands and taught him how to fish. This has continued to be his life’s passion.

Helen is survived by her daughters Kathleen (Michael) Pertzborn of McGregor, Linda (Kenneth) Bade of Elk River, and Helenann (James) Szustek of Hawaii; grandchildren Jimmy (Nancy) Struwve, Chris (Misty) Struwve, Billy Blade, Gerald Bade, Kennedy Lewis, Kathleen Ketterling, and Helenann Frances Szustek; great grandchildren Benjamin Struwve, BrieAnna Struwve, Gracie Struwve, Owen Lewis, Simon Lewis, Dallas Ketterling, and Harmony Ketterling; sister Frances Hime, nephews Donald Hime Jr. (Anita) and Richard Hime. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Waldemar H. Olsen, and sister Josephine Hime Zakowski.

Funeral service was held on Saturday, October 30th at Akkerman Ingebrand Funeral Home in Mora. Rita Clasemann officiated. Pallbearers were Michael Pertzborn, Jimmy Struwve, Anthony Struwve, Billy Bade, Gerald Bade and jack Sahlstrom. Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery of Mora. Arrangements were with the Akkerman Ingebrand Funeral Home of Mora. Condolences may be posted at www.aifuneralhome.com
