R. Nelson webRuth Nelson of Mora, died Friday, December 11, 2009 at Villa Health Care in Mora. She was 96 years old.

FUNERAL SERVICE will be 11:00 AM Friday, December 18, 2009 at Akkerman – Ingebrand Chapel.

VISITATION will be 1 hour prior to the service on Friday.

INTERMENT will be at Oakwood Cemetery

Ruth Mae (Mittelstadt) Soderstrom Nelson was born in Manchester, Iowa on October 15, 1913 to parents William E. Mittelstadt and Lucy Rebecca Badger Mittelstadt. She resided in Iowa until the family moved to a farm in Whited Township, Kanabec County, Minnesota in April 1920. Ruth attended “teachers training” in 1931-32 and taught school in rural Kanabec County for five years. On September 11, 1937 she married Stanley Soderstrom and lived on a farm north of Quamba until 1976 when they sold the farm, bought a home in Mora and lived there until Stanleys’ death on June 29, 1977. Ruth and Stanley were foster parents to several children and it proved to be a very special part of their lives. Ruth had deep religious beliefs and for many years was gathered to the name of the Lord Jesus with those who met in Quamba and more recently in Minneapolis and Lowry. Ruth married Hjalmer Nelson in September 1980 and lived with him in Mora until his death in 1984. After living in an apartment for several years, she eventually became a resident at the Villa Health Care Center in Mora.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents William & Lucy Mittelstadt; husbands Stanley Soderstrom and Hjalmer Nelson; four brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by niece Faye (Curt) Hallstrom of Buffalo, MN; nephews Robert (Melanie) Halverson of Brook Park, Richard (Marilee) Mittelstadt and William (Nancy) Mittelstadt all of Oregon; foster children and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Friday, December 18th at Akkerman Ingebrand Funeral Home in Mora. Darrell Kollman officiated. Music was provided by Deb Menze and Merlin Soderstrom. Pallbearers were Arlan Soderstrom, Ron Soderstrom, Russell Soderstrom, Merlin Soderstrom, Tim Hallstrom and Robert Halverson. Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery in Mora.

    I don’t think we have ever met. I am so sorry for your loss. I have know Ruth for almost all of my life.
    She and my grandmother (VI) were very good friends. As long as I can remember Ruth has been a part of my life.She has spent many a holidays with us and she became part of the family.
    I will miss her very much. She was a wonderful person and I’m so glad that she was in my life. Iam sorry I wasn’t able to be able to be up there today to say goodby. I just found out last night that she pasted away. It was’nt long ago(July) that I saw her.She is in many wonderful memories that I have with my Grandparents. Iam forturnate to have so many wonderful memories and she is in a lot of them.

  2. We loved Ruth, we were glad to have her as a friend, and we’ll miss her. We enjoyed all the holidays and good times we shared with her. She was a great fried of our mothers. We both had doctor’s appointments at the time of her funeral today, otherwise we would have been there. Ruth is in our prayers, and we will always fondly remember her. Sharon & Ed Halpaus
