Dorothy Lucille Gerdin, of Braham, Minnesota, went home to be with the Lord on October 1, 2009, after enduring a long battle with cancer. She was 81 years old. Dorothy was born on December 21, 1927 in Rushseba Township, Chisago County, MN to Albert and Marie Elizabeth (Rosell) Nelson. When Dorothy was 16, her father passed away. During that difficult time, she accepted Jesus as her personal Savior. She graduated in 1945 from Rush City High School. On August 6, 1949, Dorothy married James Gerdin at Harris Covenant Church. They had three children, Wesley, Lynnea, and Rosalie.

Dorothy lived on the family farm in rural Braham from 1949 to 2009. She worked as a secretary at Rush City High School from 1947 to 1949 and at Braham High School from 1952 to 1968. She was also on the Braham School Board for 6 years. Dorothy was also a caregiver for the elderly for 20 years.

Dorothy had many hobbies and interests and didn’t let grass grow under her feet. She loved singing and playing the piano and organ. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, decorating, and flower and vegetable gardening. She found growing raspberries and canning, freezing and baking with the produce from her garden very rewarding. She especially enjoyed teaching her two grandchildren many of her talents. Dorothy also had the gift of hospitality and did much entertaining. She was always ready to lend a helping hand.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Dorothy is preceded in death by parents, Albert & Marie Elizabeth Nelson; brothers, Wilbert Nelson and Reuben Nelson. Dorothy is survived by her husband, James of Braham; children, Wesley (Jorgene) Gerdin of Braham; Lynnea (Joel) Challander of Cambridge; Rosalie (Paul) Mika of East Bethel; grandchildren, Patricia Scharver-Challander and Rudolph Challander of Cambridge; brothers Paul (Violet) Nelson; Clarence (Ruth) Nelson; David (Janice) Nelson; sister, Helen Johnson, and by many other relatives and friends.

  1. You are all in our thoughts and prayers as you go through this difficult time. May God keep you wraped in His loving arms and may you find comfort in His never ending love.God Bless you all.

  2. Dorothy was one of the most hard working, smart, talented people I have ever known. She taught me lot and was a friend to me.

  3. These all (and Dorothy) died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them. Hebrews 11:13-16
