He grew up on the family farm, attended the Bryant School through eighth grade and then attended Grasston High School, graduating in 1944. Russell farmed with his father after graduation. He attended Quamba Baptist Church with his family while growing up and was baptized at Grasston Baptist Church as a teenager. Russell met Charlene Johnson who was a good friend of his sister, Violet. Russell and Charlene were married June 1, 1951 at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mora. Four children were born to this union. Russell and Charlene lived for 53 years on a farm in Comfort Township less than a mile from the house in which he had been born. Early in their marriage, Russell continued to farm with his father and also worked at the Grasston Creamery making butter and emptying milk cans. After that, he worked for the Kanabec County Highway Department from 1956 until he retired in 1984. Russell was a member of Grasston Baptist Church for over 55 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and treasured his Savior, wife, children and grandchildren. Russell was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease in 2000. His health declined in the next years. He was a resident at Cedar Crest, an assisted living facility in Hutchinson, for several months in 2003 and 2004.
