l-johnson-web.jpgLeRoy Johnson, of Mora, passed away on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at the Villa Health Care Center of Mora. He was 89 years old.

A FUNERAL SERVICE will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, January 23, 2009 at the Emmanuel Baptist Church with Rev. Victor Elfstrum presiding. VISITATION will be from 5-7pm on Thursday, January 22nd at the Akkerman Ingebrand Funeral Home of Mora. INTERMENT will be in the Stanchfield Baptist Cemetery in Stanchfield.

LeRoy Wallace Johnson, of Mora, formerly of Grandy, passed away on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at the Villa Health Care Center in Mora. He was 89 years old.

LeRoy was born on January 12, 1920 in Grandy, Minnesota to parents Elmer and Ellen (Hallstrom) Johnson. LeRoy was the second oldest of seven siblings. He attended the Stake School in Grandy and 1 year of High School. After school LeRoy helped his father on the family farm until he moved to the twin cities area to work.
In 1951 LeRoy married Beverly Brolin in St. Paul, Minnesota and to this union four children were born. LeRoy work at Oscar Roberts Sand and Gravel as a Cement truck driver for many years. For three years, LeRoy worked as a Fridley Auxiliary Police Officer. He was very proud of this job and received an award for his help in the apprehension of a felon.

In the early 1970’s, LeRoy moved to the Mora area where he met Helen Hallstrom. They were married in December of 1973 and together they moved to the Hallstrom family farm where they resided for the next 20 years. LeRoy loved his time on the farm and spent many hours mowing the grass and plowing snow. He loved to drive the tractors and help on the farm. During those years, LeRoy worked as a Funeral Director’s Assistant for both Charlie Akkerman and Michael Ingebrand, a job that he greatly enjoyed. Due to declining health in 1996, Helen moved to the Grandview Christian Home and passed away in 2001. LeRoy moved to the Dala House Apartments in Mora. He became fast friends with fellow resident AnnaMae Lidstrom and together they had many great times.

LeRoy first attended the Stanchfield Baptist Church as a child, and later became members of the Oak Hill Baptist Church, the Quamba Baptist Church, and was in regular attendance at the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Mora. LeRoy enjoyed his time spent in bible study groups and other church functions.

LeRoy was such a compassionate person, and would always take time to visit with sick friends and family. LeRoy’s greatest loves were all his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be deeply missed.

LeRoy is preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Ellen Johnson, wife Helen, infant sister, sisters Jeanette, Gladys, and Irene, and brother Ted.

LeRoy is survived by his children Craig (Connie) Johnson of Pueblo, CO; Mike (Jeanette) Johnson of Pequot Lakes; LeRoy (Phyllis) Johnson of Little Falls; Joylene Johnson of Pueblo, CO; step children Roger (Vi) Hallstrom of Mora; Curt (Faye) Hallstrom of Buffalo; and Sandy (Mark) Klosterman of North Oaks; brothers: Floyd (Delores) Johnson of Shakopee; and Roger (Lorna) Johnson of Stanchfield; sisters: Laverne Pfouts of Ohio; Joyce Johnson of Cambridge; Della Person of Isanti; and Ruth Johnson of Stanchfield; 18 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A Funeral Service held on Friday, January 23, 2009 at the Emmanuel Baptist Church with Rev. Victor Elfstrum presiding. Music provided by Randy and Carol Reynolds. Casketbearers: Steve Hallstrom, Gordon Hallstrom, Tim Hallstrom, Ron Johnson, Dave Gunderson, and Russell Pfouts. Interment at Stanchfield Baptist Cemetery.

  1. Our condolences to the family. Since we moved to Florida, we never saw Uncle LeRoy. Craig, I know you don’t remember this, but you were in our wedding in 1956. God Bless You!
