Roger Fossen, of Hinckley, formerly of Mora, died on Saturday, Dec. 20th at St. Cloud Hospital. He was 83 years old.
FUNERAL SERVICES will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, Dec., 26 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hinckley. VISITATION will be from 9:30 – 11:00 AM on Friday morning at the church. INTERMENT will be in the spring at MN State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, MN.
Roger Fossen, Sr., of Hinckley, MN, was born March 29, 1925 in Beardsley, MN. In 1942, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served in both WWII and the Korean conflict. After nine years in the U.S. Navy he continued his service in the U.S. Coast Guard where he was a signalman aboard an ice breaker, the USS Northwind.
On Roger’s 25th birthday he met Lila Mae O’Brien in Seattle, Washington. On May 6, 1950, just 39 days after meeting, they wed. On Saturday, December 20, 2008, at the age of 83, Roger died peacefully in Lila’s loving arms, surrounded by family.
Roger was a member of the Mora American Legion Post 201, the VFW, and the Disabled American Veterans.
Roger loved his family, the military, music, cooking, fishing, a good joke and a trip to the casino. His sense of humor, quick wit, and graciousness served him well in life and remained with him even thru his final days.
Roger was welcomed in heaven by his parents George and Mabel; sister Pearl; brothers Clarence, Mel, Hilmer, Victor, Fred and Les; and by his infant daughter.
He is survived by his loving family: wife of 58 years, Lila; seven children, Diana (Darrel) Wilson, Susan (Roger) Justison, Debbie (Jerry) Christianson, Martin (Leo) Fossen, T.J. (Jacqueline) Fossen, Roger, Jr. (Yalonda) Fossen, Sheila (Gary) Grammond. Also surviving Roger are his beloved 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his special nieces Lila and Torchy; and his loyal dog Abby.
Funeral services were held on Friday, December 26th at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hinckley, MN. Interment will be in the spring at the MN State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, MN. Arrangements were handled by Akkerman Ingebrand Funeral and Cremation Services in Mora.
