Howard V. Mattson, 84, of Lake Wales, Florida, died Thursday, May 15, 2008 at Dove Healthcare.

He was born in Mora, Minnesota on April 21, 1924 to Alfred and Alice (Hirsch) Mattson. Served in the US Army as an aerial photographer in the Philippines and took photographs during the Japanese war crime trials. He graduated from the University of Minnesota and played college football for the Minnesota Gophers. He met Kate while pursuing his career in banking in Minneapolis. After twenty years of banking, he (along with Kate) bought, improved and sold many businesses such as restaurants in So. Dakota, New Mexico and Florida. He was a member of the American Legion in Mora. He was of the Lutheran Faith.

Survivors include his wife Kathleen A. Mattson, son Bruce (Angela) Mattson of Boca Raton, FL, daughter Barbara (David) Holloway of Salley, SC, son Robert Mattson of Hondo, NM, four grandchildren, and his brother Warren (Mary) Mattson of Mora. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Beverly, and a brother Richard.


Kathleen “Kate” Mattson, 73, of Lake Wales, Florida, died on September 24, 2008 under Vitas Hospice Care after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Delmar, Iowa on November 30, 1934 to Leo and Josephine Stevens. She and her husband Howard had a real love of life; they reveled in meeting new people and experiencing different cultures and careers. They spent several years in Bentonville, Arkansas where she enjoyed employment in the real estate division of Wal-Mart. Most recently, they spent the last 10 years living in Lake Wales, FL.

Kate was a devout Catholic. Her faith gave her strength and showed in the unconditional love she bestowed on family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her brother Paul Stevens; and her beloved husband Howard.

She is survived by brothers Gerald (Darlene) Stevens of Mediapolis, IA, Kenny (Velma) Stevens of Centerville, IA, Earl (LaVonne) Stevens of Maquoketa, IA, and Dick (Sue) Stevens of DeWitt, IA; sister Mary Robbins of Logansport ID; sister-in-law Helen Stevens of Delmar, IA; stepsons Bruce (Angela) Mattson of Boca Raton, FL, and Robert Mattson of Hondo, NM; step-daughter Barbara (David) Holloway of Salley, SC; 4 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
