A FUNERAL SERVICE will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at the Akkerman Ingebrand Funeral Home of Mora with Rev. Bob DeYoung presiding. VISITATION will be one hour prior to the service. INTERMENT will be in the Oakwood Cemetery of Mora

Verley Lester Long, of Cambridge, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2008 at the Cambridge Medical Center. He was 87 years old.

Verley Long was born to parents Lester and Elsie (Coldwell) Long in Minneapolis, MN on May 21, 1921. He was one of three sons. At the age of two, the family moved to Cumberland, WI where Verley attended school until the 9th grade and worked at a local stable. After school he moved to Hopkins where he worked on a vegetable truck farm for the next several years.
Verley then moved to Mora where he worked as a commercial fisherman. During this time he met Darlene Ammerman and on October 22, 1941 in Black River Falls, WI they were united in marriage. After the wedding, Verley and Darlene honeymooned in Los Angles, CA where they stayed for the next year. They moved back to Mora where their first daughter Carol was born.
Verley got work with the railroad that took him to Hastings, NE for a year and then to Alaska for another year where he worked on the Alcan Highway. Upon his return, Verley and Darlene settled in Minneapolis where together they raised their six children. Verley worked for Superior Plating and retired after 30 years of dedicated employment. After retirement Verley and Darlene returned north and lived in Brook Park, Mora, and finally Cambridge.

Verley loved to fish, he would fish any where or any time. He also enjoyed deer hunting in the fall. In his early years, Verley loved to take his family camping throughout Minnesota. Verley would spend much of his time puttering and fixing anything and everything, and he always kept his tools and equipment in pristine condition. He will be deeply missed by the family and friends.

Verley is preceded in death by his parents Lester and Elsie (Coldwell) Long, brothers Lyle and Willis, and grandson Paul.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Darlene of Cambrdge; sons Michael (Nancy) of Minneapolis, and Larry (Caroline) of Chaska; daughters Carol Steiner of Garrison, Bonnie Kersten of Pillager, Linda (Kermit) Grafenstein of Brooklyn Center, and Roxane DeYoung of Milaca; fifteen grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren, one nephew, many other relatives, and friends.

A Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at the Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home in Mora, MN. Rev. Bob DeYoung officiated. Music was provided by Bob DeYoung and Roxane DeYoung. Pallbearers were Verley’s six children. Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery in Mora.
