HELEN ARLENE SAHLIN

h-saldin-webphoto.jpgHelen Sahlin, of Cambridge, passed away on Sunday, September 21, 2008 at the GracePointe Crossing West (formerly Grandview) of Cambridge. She was 93 years old.

A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at the Rush City Baptist Church with Rev. David Melin presiding. VISITATION will one hour prior to the service at church. INURNMENT will be in the Royalton Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Helen Arlene Sahlin was born on October 15, 1914 in Cambridge, Minnesota to Alford and Grace Olander. She was the fourth child of the six Olander children, having 3 sisters and 2 brothers.
She grew up on the Olander farm in rural Braham and attended country school there. As a young woman, Helen held various jobs both in Minneapolis and Braham. She worked at the Braham Hospital assisting the local doctor and helping to deliver babies and care for the newborns.
It was in Braham that she met Harry Sahlin. They were married on October 14, 1944 in Grasston. Together they provided a home for their son, Frank and daughter, Grace. They purchased the Sahlin family farm from Harry’s parents and farmed for many years. Helen was very involved in their church, Grasston Baptist, and served as Sunday School Superintendent for 16 years. Helen also worked as a nurses aide at Grandview Christian Home in Cambridge.
Harry and Helen retired from farming but continued to live on the farm until 1994 when they moved to Rush City. After Harry’s death in April of 1998, Helen remained in Rush City until, with declining health, she became a resident at Grandview Christian Home in May of 2001. She lived there until her death on September 21, 2008 at the age of 93 years. She was a member of the Grasston Baptist Church for all these years.
Helen is survived by her son, Frank Sahlin and wife, Linda of Blaine, MN and her daughter, Grace Dahl of Minnetonka Beach, MN; 4 grandchildren, Denise Gray and husband, Scott of Wheatland, IA, Vicki Christiansen and husband, Chad of Brooklyn Park, MN, Jessica Schmidt and husband, Jim of Mapleton, MN, and Zachary Dahl and wife, Rebecca of White Bear Lake, MN; 6 great-grandchildren Ann Gray, Sarah Gray, Noah Christiansen, Eli Christiansen, Alissa Schmidt and Rocco Dahl; 3 step great-grandchildren Brady, Madison and Hunter, and many relatives and friends.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at Rush City Baptist Church with Rev. David Melin officiating. Music was provided by Ellie Whittaker, Judy Nelson, Roger Anderson, Charlotte and Wilbert Strelow. Honorary Urn bearers were David Krinke, Harlan Krinke, Roger Kerr and John Olander. Interment was in the Royalton Memorial Cemetery.
