Allen Bert Sanders, Jr. was born on December 13, 1950 at Kanabec Hospital, Mora, Minnesota to Allen B. and Violet (Holmstrom) Sanders. He grew up working on the family farm while attending Wilkens Country school and later graduated from Mora High School in 1969. He started working at Bluewater Yachts right out of high school, where he worked until his death. Al was drafted into the US Army in 1970 and spent one year fighting in Vietnam, where he received a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars.
On June 28, 1975, Al married Gladys Elaine Mitchell at the Maple Ridge Free Church in Stanchfield. They built a home and farm on the north edge of Al’s home farm. Al enjoyed farming with his John Deere equipment and teaching his grandson how to drive a tractor. He was very proud of his two boys and daughter-in-law.
During his fight with cancer these last several months he became a transformed man through God’s help. He would look for the beauty in everything. He was always quick to tell anyone that “God started life with a heartbeat; He’ll end it with a heartbeat; and only God knows when that will be.” He ignored the statistics of his cancer and lived each day to the fullest.
