Elsie Marie (Swanson) Hansen was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 15, 1905 to August and Hannah (Norman) Swanson. Being one of five children, she remembered riding with her father in a horse and buggy. They lived in New Brighton and her father was a carpenter. Elsie attended schools in Minneapolis, Warman and Mora, where she graduated from high school. Her schooling was interrupted by the influenza epidemic of 1918, but she recovered and eventually graduated in 1925. Following high school she attended “Normal School”, which was a teaching program at Cokato, Minnesota, and then became a rural elementary teacher, teaching at several Kanabec County schools. Some of her favorite memories were riding the street cars in Minneapolis, and fishing for sunfish on Lake Full-of-Fish (after first digging the angleworms for bait), gardening and picking wild fruits and flowers. Elsie was united in marriage to Zola Hansen on April 27, 1929 in Minneapolis, and they resided in the Warman area, as well as Isle and Wahkon, where they raised their three children. In their later years they moved to the Park Forest apartments in Mora, before becoming residents of the Villa Health Care Center in 2001.

She is remembered as always being special to her grandchildren, reading and playing with them. In this last year she spent Christmas dinner at the Gorham’s and celebrated her 102nd birthday outside by eating home made ice cream and cake.

Elsie was preceded in death by her husband Zola Hansen in 2003, parents August and Hannah Swanson, brothers Carl and Donald Swanson, and sisters Katherine Cottrell and Phyllis Ruth.

Elsie is survived by her children Marilyn Gorham and husband Bob of Mora, Marge Boekenoogen of St. Cloud, and John Hansen and wife Helen of Brainerd; grandchildren Michael (Wendy) Gorham, Pat (Carmel) Gorham, Julie (Bruce) Freeman, Rena Boekenoogen, David (Peggy) Hansen, Janet (Tom) Szajner, Caroling (Peter) Larson, Patty (Steve) Eckdahl; great-grandchildren Rachel and Neil Gorham; Angela Gorham; Lisa Freeman; Kristopher, Nicholas and Whitney Szajner; Anna, Linnea, Elizabeth, William, Benjamin and Samuel Larson; Jon Eckdahl; and step-sons Thomas, Eugene and Nicholas Wells;
