_____________________________________________

Arnold C. Nehring was born on March 8, 1925 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Richard and Ruth Nehring. He was the third of five children and grew up in the Moose Lake/Barnum area. In 1943, he left school to enlist in the U.S. Navy and was trained as a radioman in Farragut, Idaho and Yerba Bueno Island, San Francisco, California prior to serving on three ships in the South Pacific during WW II.

After being honorably discharged in 1946, Arnie returned home to the Mora area where his parents farmed. It didn’t take him long to meet Audrey Nikodym at a dance and they were married on April 10, 1947 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Brunswick. They had three children and except for short moves to Saint Paul and Sunnyvale, California, they lived in Mora.

He was self-employed as a TV and electronic repairman, but he wore a variety of other “hats.” He was a letter carrier for the Post Office, volunteer Mora firefighter, Justice of the Peace, school bus driver, part-time police officer for the city of Mora, and his most enjoyable position – ambulance driver and EMT; first at Akkerman’s Mortuary when they provided ambulance service to the community and then at Kanabec County Hospital.

Arnie was the oldest active EMT in the State of Minnesota at the time of his retirement.
He was active for many years at Zion Lutheran Church serving as an usher and Sunday school teacher. Arnie was a member of the American Legion Lee Goldsmith Post 201. He loved to golf and was a member of the men’s golf league for many years. He also enjoyed ham radio and growing roses. But one of his greatest joys was volunteering in the community.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Betty, brother Dick, and wife Audrey.

Arnie is survived by his children Sandra (Bob) Johnson, Robert (Mary) Nehring, Barbara (Lloyd) Johnson, grandchildren Christiana Johnson, Jacob, Audrey and Joshua Nehring, and Elizabeth and Matthew Johnson, brother Ken Nehring, sister Phyllis Peterson, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 9th at Zion Lutheran Church. Rev. Greggory Coop will officiate. Organist will be Karen Kirschner. Pallbearers are Greg Ardner, Ernie Blaisdell, Dennis Danielson, Gene Anderson, Jerry Trott and Lynn Osterman. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Ed Burseth, Richard Krummel, Gordy Heim, Vernon Smith, Gene Nelson, Ed Rypkema and John Daggett. Interment at Oakwood Cemetery in Mora.
