Shirley Pierce, of St. Paul, died on November 8, 2007 at Regions Hospital. She was 71 years old.

MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, November 17th, 2007 at the Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home in Mora. Inurnment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Mora.


Shirley Faye Pierce, of St. Paul, Minnesota, formerly of Mora, passed away from a massive coronary on November 8, 2007 at Regions Hospital in St. Paul. She was 71 years, 6 months old.
She was born May 10, 1936 in Roseau, Minnesota to Varney John and Zola (Christensen) Pierce of Warroad, Minnesota. She lived on the original family government issued homestead in Spruce township, Roseau County, farming with her family until 1941. They moved to Staples, Minnesota and then to Albert Lea and Clarks Grove in Freeborn County where Shirley started her formal education.
In 1948 she became a baptized member of the Clarks Grove First Baptist Church, beginning a life long faith in the First Baptist Churches of Portland, Oregon, St. Paul and Winona.
In 1952 she moved with her family to Kanabec County near Woodland where she finished school in Mora, Minnesota; Class of 1955.
In 1956 she moved to Portland, Oregon starting her career as a nanny. Returning to Minnesota she worked in St. Paul and Winona until 1986. She then started her life long dream of becoming an X-ray Technician; graduating in 1972 from Duluth and Two Harbors. She began her new career at the University of Minnesota Hospital and worked in a variety of heart and hematology labs from 1973 until she retired about 2000. During that time she was involved in the research to find early recognizable cells of Hodge skin’s Disease, making it the treatable curable disease of today.
Shirley always enjoyed farming and gardening. Holidays (especially Christmas and Easter) were enjoyed and spent with her family.
She was active in the AFSME Union at work and in the Frog Town Association, holding many offices in both.
Shirley enjoyed traveling. Taking her mother to Nashville in 1982 was her last auto trip. Her last air flight was to Disney World; an unfinished trip on 9-11-01.
She was preceded in death by her parents John & Zola Pierce; infant niece Valery Pierce; sister Kathleen Pierce Modrow Hintz; brothers-in-law Joe Bernecker, Vernon Modrow and Lee Hintz; nine aunts, nine uncles and her grandparents.
She is survived by 3 aunts Julia Mertens of Staples, Sue Blake of McGrath, and Verna Ellingson of Oregon; a brother Varney Pierce of St. Paul; a sister Jeanne Bernecker of Braham; nieces Rosemarie Smith of Mpls., Virginia (Jake) Jacobson of Big Lake, Kimberly (Enricka) Valesquez of St Paul, Cristin (Mike) Winsor of Chisago; nephews Joe Bernecker of Rochester, Vincent and Daney Pierce of St. Paul and their children Terena & Nathan Pierce, Julian Heron, Valarie & Neal Smith, Jerome (Jen) Jacobson all of Mpls. area, Josh, Brittany and Zach Jacobson of Big Lake; Enricka Jr. & Emillo Valesquez of St. Paul, Pierce Bernecker and many step and grand step nieces & nephews all of Mora; plus oodles of cousins, many, many friends and other relatives.
