Vera Mae Larson-Paulno died Saturday, October 13 at her home in Braham. She was 84 years old.
Funeral Service will be at 11:00 AM THURSDAY, October 18, 2007 at Stanchfield Baptist Church with visitation from 9:30-11:00 at church.
Vera Mae Gilbertson was born on May 7, 1923 in Hinckley, MN to Arthur Gilbertson and Lottie Mae Brant Gilbertson. She graduated from Hinckley High School and Teachers Training, and taught in Pine County rural
schools for three years before uniting in marriage to farmer and mechanic Elmer Larson in June of 1944. She moved about 16 miles, “as the crow flies” from the Gilbertson family farm east of Hinckley to the Larson family farm
east of Sandstone. After 53 years of marriage and Elmer’s “homegoing,” Vera married long-time friend Edward Paulno and moved to his farm east of North Branch. After his passing, she settled into the Park Manor in Braham, where
she was to spend the last 4 years of her life.
She will always be remembered for her generosity, energy, and zest for life. She was a very busy person, often helping others. She was active in her Christian life, receiving a 20th year pin for helping with the
children’s church club AWANAS, attending Bible studies all her life, and hosting many meetings for prayer and youth group. She loved being outside, gardening, spending time in her flower beds, and working with Elmer with wood.
She enjoyed summer camping trips, especially those to Split Rock Lighthouse (where she and Elmer honeymooned) and driving around Lake Superior. She also liked having breakfast and coffee in town while visiting with family,
friends, and neighbors. She wrote the Sand Creek news for area newspapers from 1983 to 1999, receiving many compliments from neighbors, friends, and even out-of-state subscribers.
Vera passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 13, 2007 only 3 weeks after receiving the diagnosis of untreatable acute leukemia. She was lovingly cared for during this time by her four daughters, under the supervision of “the best and only” son, Larry. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Lyle and Clifford, and by one infant grandson.
Vera is survived by son Larry (Dorothy) Larson of New Brighton; four daughters, Donna (Thomas) Bestland of Cushing, Lola (Kenneth) Murphy of Sandstone, Trudy (Norris) Johnson of Milaca, and Jody (Bradley) Myrvold of
Stillwater; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 2 unborn great-grandchildren; one sister, Viola Stuempges; one nephew; one niece; and one sister-in-law, Bernice Schull.
