Lorraine Vollmer, of Mora, MN died on Wednesday, August 15th. She was 87 years old.
MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held on Sunday, August 19th, 2:00 P.M. at Mora United Methodist Church. There will be no visitation. INURNMENT will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Mpls.
Lorraine E. Vollmer was born in 1920 to Josie and Charles Schlafle in a country home in Golden Valley, Minnesota where she spent all her childhood years, which she shared with her parents, her sister, and grandparents.
In her teens, Lorraine worked summers at Lake Hubert as a nanny. When she was 19 she went with this same family to Ohio, then New York, continuing to be their nanny
During the War years Lorraine worked for Western Union in Minneapolis, then Chicago, then Los Angeles. In 1946 she applied for a Civil Service job to work in Yokohama, Japan
From 1950 to 1953 Lorraine live in Minneapolis, the Olympia, WA, then Monterey and Atascadero, CA. From 1953054 Lorraine worked at the Mpls. VA Hospital in Dietetics.
In July 1954 she married Harold Vollmer at Glendive, MT. They lived in Bloomington, MN where they ran an organic fruit and vegetable stand called the Corn Crib
In 1959 they bought the Ferndale Nursery in Askov, MN which they ran for the next 12 years. In 1971 they moved to Mora, MN with intention to semi-retire, but soon the Ala Mora Nursery became their full-fledged business. They sold that business and retired in 1979.
Studying the Word of God was an especially dear passion of Lorraine’s. She enjoyed meeting with the 9/11 group at the Mora United Methodist Church. She also enjoyed cooking (always healthy stuff!) and reading, and listening to tapes on spiritual topics. She appreciated the opportunity to mentor a young boy for 2 years with the FISH Kinship program.
Lorraine was preceded in death by sister Dorothy Bliss, and her husband Harold Vollmer. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, cousins, other family members, and many friends.
